Men’s Soccer Blanks Old Westbury, Advances To Skyline Conference Championship Final

Fuge, Stark score in win

Newburgh, N.Y. – Junior Matt Fuge (Avon, Conn.) scored 33 seconds into the game and classmate Fred Stark (Hollis, N.Y.) added an insurance goal late in the first half to give the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team a 2-0 Skyline Conference Championship Semifinal win over Old Westbury on Wednesday night.

Fuge got the Knights off to a fast start when he converted a turnover by the Old Westbury keeper into a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the contest. He blocked a clearing pass and worked his way around the keeper for what proved to be the game winning goal.

Holding a one goal advantage, Stark gave the Knights a two goal lead with just over three minutes left before halftime. After Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) headed a ball into the box, Bereket Watts (Southold, N.Y.) played to ball to Stark who found an open net at the 41:54 mark of the contest.

The Knights scored on their only two shots of the first half and were outshot 12-7 in the contest. Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) turned away all six of Old Westbury's shots on target to pick up his sixth shutout of the season. He lowered his goals against average to 0.60 and raised his save percentage to .857.

Fuge scored his first game winning goal of the season and tallied for the fourth time in 2017. Stark pushed his point total to 10 with his third marker of the year and Dolan moved into a tie for second place in the conference in points with 36 on his second assists of the season. Watts moved into fourth on the team in points with his second helper of the year.

Jorey Garcia led Old Westbury with three shots in the game and goalkeeper Mike Warren made a pair of saves for the Panthers.

For the game, Old Westbury finished with the edge in shots and shots on goal, while the Knights posted a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

At 11-7 overall on the season, the Mount will play host to St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday in the Skyline Conference Championship Final. Kick-off with the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
