Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team returned to conference play on Saturday, suffering a hard fought 5-4 loss on the road at Purchase. Sophomore
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) won her seventh singles match of the season and ran her winning streak to three for the Mount.
Vernon moved within one victory of the team lead in singles play on Saturday, outlasting her opponent at the sixth position by scores of 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Saturday's win pushes her to 7-3 overall on the season and to 3-2 at the sixth slot.
Fellow sophomore
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) got back into the win column on Saturday and collected her team leading eighth win of the season. She is 7-3 in her last 10 decisions following a 6-1, 6-4 victory for the Knights at the top position.
Senior
Dorothy Tighe (Walden, N.Y.) continued her steady season with her sixth victory of the year. She evened her fifth singles record at 3-3 on Saturday after collecting a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
In doubles play, the top pair of Carnovale and
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) earned the Mount's only victory of the day. The duo improved their record together to 6-5 with a convincing 8-2 victory.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-6 overall on the season and to 2-3 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Mount is a trip to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Tuesday. Match time at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
