Riverdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team suffered a 15-25, 18-25, 17-25 loss at fourth seeded College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday in the First Round of the 2017 Skyline Conference Championship. Senior
Julimar Figueroa (Dorado, Puerto Rico) finished with 22 digs for the Knights.
After falling behind by five points early in the opening frame, the Knights used a four point run keyed by kills from
Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.Y.) and
Nicole Spinelli (Wantagh, N.Y.) to move to within 13-12. The Dolphins answered with six straight points to open a 19-12 lead and used a three point run following a service error to close the opening frame.
The Knights grabbed an 8-5 lead in the middle frame following a Williams winner and a pair of Mount Saint Vincent errors, but the Dolphins again answered with a four point spurt to move in front 9-8. The two teams went back-and-forth until a nine point run from the Dolphins pushed them in front 22-15. The Knights got to within 23-18 on a
Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) kill, but consecutive kills from Sayde McDermott pushed the Dolphins in front 2-0.
Mount Saint Vincent ran out to a 10-2 lead in the third set and maintained at least a four point lead the rest of the way to earn the sweep. The Dolphins made only four attack errors in the final set against nine for the Knights.
Williams led the Mount Saint Mary offensive attack with eight kills to go along with six digs. Burke finished the night with six winners and a block for the Knights with Spinelli and
Ally Klesin (Glendale, N.Y.) each putting away three kills.
Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) handed out 17 assists for the Knights and lifted four digs, with
Jackie Survilla (West Islip, N.Y.) recording two of the team's three service aces. Figueroa lifted at least 20 digs for the fifth time in 2017 with a match-high 22.
Mount Saint Vincent was led by 14 kills from Tara Maloney with Maria Leineweber adding 12 winners while hitting .455. Maloney lifted a team-high 17 digs and Nicole Henderson led all players with 33 assists and added a pair of service aces.
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent finished with a 42-26 advantage in kills and hit .246 as a unit. The Dolphins held a slim 4-3 edge in service aces, while the Knights took the advantage in total team blocks 4-1.
Tuesday's loss ends the Mount's season at 14-19.
