Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team got back into the win column and evened its Skyline Conference record on Tuesday with a 6-3 home win over four-time defending champion Farmingdale State. Sophomore
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) ran her winning streak to six matches in the victory.
Carnovale moved to 7-2 on the season on Tuesday with a hard fought 6-3, 6-4 victory at first singles. She has won six straight matches since opening the season at 1-2 and stands at 21-3 overall in her career for the Mount, including an impressive 9-2 mark against Skyline Conference opponents.
Freshman
Victoria Clay (Smithtown, N.Y.) also improved her personal winning streak to five matches and moved her singles record to 5-3 on the season with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at the fourth position. Clay is 2-0 on the season at third singles and 3-3 at the fourth position in her first eight career decisions.
Sophomore
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) finished off the Mount's three singles wins on Tuesday with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the sixth spot. She improved to 5-3 overall on the season and to 2-2 at the sixth position for the Knights.
In doubles play, Carnovale and Clay along with
Charlotte Pascual (Freeport, N.Y.) and
Dorothy Tighe (Walden, N.Y.) won their fifth matches of the season. Carnovale and Clay moved to 5-4 on the season with an 8-6 win at first doubles, while Pascual and Tighe improved to 5-3 after outlasting their opponents 9-8 (7-5) at the second position.
Antonietta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and
Julia Lorenzo (Emerald Isle, N.C.) won their third match of the season with an 8-4 third doubles win.
Tuesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary back above .500 overall on the season at 5-4 and evens its league record at 2-2. The Knights return to action on Thursday for a 5:00 p.m. non-conference match with Hartwick.
