Knights Have Winning Streak Stopped At Montclair State

Murphy scores lone goal in loss

Montclair, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team saw its 10 game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night with a 3-1 non-conference road loss at Montclair State. Freshman Haley Murphy (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored the Mount's lone goal in the second half.

The Red Hawks got off to a fast start on Thursday and did all of their scoring inside the first 20 minutes of the contest. Melanie Cunha scored the team's first two goals, opening the scoring just 1:45 into the game and adding the eventual game winner, her fifth goal of the season, at the 13:18 mark.

Montclair State grew its lead to three goals at 19:35 when Christine Mayorga scored for the fourth time in 2017 off a pass from Emily Beenders.

The Mount was outshot over the first half 11-4 and finished the opening 45 minutes with a 3-1 disadvantage in corner kicks.

Murphy scored the only goal of the second half when she got the Mount on the board in the 61st minute. She finished off a Nicolette Wurglics (Glendale, N.Y.) feed at 60:18 for her fifth goal of her freshman season.

Murphy's goal moves her into a tie for fourth place on the team in markers and makes her one of nine players with at least 10 points on the season for the Knights. Wurglics moved into third place on the team in assists with her sixth helper of the year.

Senior Mary Riley (Newburgh,N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal for the Knights, making a season-high 12 saves in the contest. Molly Barrow picked up the win with eight stops for the red Hawks.

Montclair State finished the night with a 25-14 advantage in shots and a 15-9 edge in shots on goal, while corner kicks in the game were even at 3-3.

At 13-3-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline Conference play on Saturday morning at Maritime. Kick-off with the Privateers is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
