Patchogue, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team advanced to the Skyline Conference Championship Final with a hard fought 5-4 upset win over second seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. on Wednesday evening.
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.),
Victoria Clay (Saint James, N.Y.) and
Dorothy Tighe (Walden, N.Y.) scored key singles victories for the Knights.
Mount Saint Mary got off to a good start on Wednesday, picking up two of the three doubles points available. Tighe and
Charlotte Pascual (Freeport, N.Y.) outlasted their opponents from St. Joseph's by a score of 8-6 and
Antonietta Capone (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) cruised to an 8-2 victory at the third position.
In singles action, the Mount took the first, fourth and fifth points to close out the victory.
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) eased to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the first position, with Clay scoring a 6-3, 6-2 fourth position. Tighe held off her opponent at the fifth position and clinched the win for the Knights with scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Carnovale improved to 12-4 at first singles on the season, with Clay picking up her 10
th win of the season and moving to 7-4 in fourth singles matches. Tighe posted her ninth victory for the Knights, including a 6-3 mark at the fifth position.
Wednesday's win moves the Mount to 8-8 overall on the season. The Knights will look for their fifth bid to the NCAA Tournament when they take on top-seeded Yeshiva on Sunday afternoon. Match time at the National Tennis Center is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
