Women’s Volleyball Ready For New Paltz Invitational

Knights face four tough opponents over two days

Newburgh, N.Y. – Coming off a 3-0 road loss at FDU-Florham on Wednesday night, the Mount Saint Mary Women's Volleyball team will be back on the court Friday and Saturday for four matches at the New Paltz Invitational. The Knights will take on Stockton and New York University on Friday before tussling with Fredonia and Stevens on Saturday.
 
At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary enters the weekend at 1-4 overall after dropping a straight set decision to FDU-Florham on Wednesday. Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Angelia Cirigliano (Newburgh, N.Y.) led the offensive attack with six kills each, while Kristen Maddock (Patchogue, N.Y.) finished with 26 assists and three digs.
 
Junior Julimar Figueroa (Dorado, Puerto Rico) anchored the Mount's back line with 11 digs, reaching double-figures in the category for the third time in 2016. Figueroa also led the Knights with three of the team's five service aces.
 
Through five matches in 2016, Mount Saint Mary is led by 30 kills from senior Rachel Sabitini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), while Figueroa is leading the way with five service aces and 59 digs. Maddock has handed out a team-high 108 assists, good for 6.75 per set, while newcomer Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) is the team leader in total blocks with eight.
 
A Look At Stockton: The Ospreys enter the weekend a perfect 4-0 after claiming each match at last weekend's SUNY Cortland Tournament and are seeking their ninth straight NJAC title in 2016. Idi Uffen is off to a strong start to the season, leading Stockton with 45 kills, while hitting .477, and 26 total blocks, just shy of two per set. Rebecka Zabilowicz has lifted 97 digs for the Ospreys through four matches, averaging better than six digs per set.
 
Scouting NYU: The Violets are off to a 2-2 start to the season and are coming of 3-0 victories over both Plattsburg and Ramapo at the NYU Labor Day Invitational. Gretchen Cash paces NYU in kills with 34 and is hitting an impressive .329 on the season. Grace Napolitano has recorded 72 digs heading into the weekend, good for 5.54 per set, and Daryl Mitchell is tops on the team in assists with 71, handing out just shy of eight helpers per set.
 
Facing Fredonia: The Blue Devils stand at 3-2 overall on the season after splitting two matches at the SUNY Cortland Tournament and posting a straight set win over Allegheny in their 2016 home opener on Tuesday. Megan Collins leads the Fredonia offense with 36 kills, while Kailey Falk has posted a team-high nine service aces over the first five matches of the season. Courtney Poirier is tops of the team with 40 digs.
 
Scouting Stevens: The Ducks head into the weekend at 4-1 overall, coming off of three wins at the Pacific Coast Classic and a 3-0 sweep of Hunter on Wednesday in their home opener. Mary Tobin has put away a team-high 44 kills for Stevens, while Emily Piekarski has recorded 10 service aces. Sydni Horner is averaging better than five digs per set through the season's first five matches and Brianna Perez has handed out 144 assists, good for an even nine helpers per set. Shelby Stewart is also off to a good start for the Ducks with 15 total blocks on the year.
 
Looking Ahead: Following the four matches at New Paltz, Mount Saint Mary will play its first home match of the season on September 14 when Bard pays a visit to the Kaplan Center. After the home opener, the Mount heads right back out on the road for four matches at the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Ramapo.
