Jessica Lanning (Hicksville, N.Y.) and
Bridget McKeever (Wallkill, N.Y.) scored just over a minute apart late in regulation, but it was enough as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team dropped a 3-2 Skyline Conference heartbreaker at Sage on Wednesday night.
Sage struck twice right out of the gate on Wednesday, with Samantha Trimblett finding the back of the net twice inside the first four minutes of play. Her first of the game came just 61 seconds into the contest and her second marker of the early going came at the 3:32 mark of the tilt.
Mount Saint Mary held Sage off the board the rest of the first half and allowed just one more shot to the Gators. The Knights finished the opening 45 minutes with twice as many shots as Sage and took all three corner kicks earned in the first period.
The Knights found themselves down by three goals in the 60
th minute when Trimblett finished off a hat trick at the 59:09 mark of the game. She buried a pass from Taylor Lynch to give the Gators a commanding three goal advantage.
The Mount started its comeback in the 72
nd minute when Lanning tallied for the first time in 2016 at the 71:28 mark of the match.
Allison Jones (Merrick, N.Y.) played a ball from midfield into the box that Lanning deposited to get the Knights on the board.
The deficit became more manageable just over a minute later when McKeever pounded home her second goal of the season. She initially had a penalty kick saved but collected the rebound and finished off the goal to bring the Mount to within a goal with just under 20 minutes left in regulation time.
The Knights, who outshot Sage 18-6 after halftime, would force Cassy Robataille to make seven saves after the McKeever tally to secure the lead for Sage. The Knights finished the last 15 minutes of regulation with nine shots overall.
McKeever led the Mount with eight shots in the game, with Jones adding four and
Destiny Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, N.Y.) posting three.
Junior
Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal, making four saves on the night. Robataille stopped 12 shots in the win for the Gators.
For the game, Mount Saint Mary outshot Sage 24-9, including 14-7 in shots on target. There was not a corner kick in the second half, with the Mount finishing with a 3-0 edge in the category.
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 3-6 overall and to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will return home to host Maritime on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off with the Privateers is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
