Mount Saint Mary Collects Non-Conference Victory Over Brooklyn

Five Knights record at least seven kills in the win

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team won its second match at the Kaplan Center in as many home outings with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-17 straight set victory over Brooklyn on Wednesday night. Five Knights finished the match with at least seven kills, including Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Angelia Cirigliano (Newburgh, N.Y.) who posted eight each.
 
After falling behind 5-1 in the early going of the opening set on Wednesday, the Knights used a series of three point runs to rebound for a 1-0 lead in the match. The Mount closed the first set on a 9-2 run, using kills from Cirigliano and Kristen Maddock (Medford, N.Y.) and a service ace from Jackie Survilla (West Islip, N.Y.) to close out the first frame.
 
The Mount picked right up where it left off to start the second set, running out to a 6-0 lead on its way to a 10 point second set victory. The visitors would close out within 10-6, but a four point run from the Knights pushed the lead back to 14-6.
 
Mount Saint Mary got four kills each from Nicole Spinelli (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.Y.) in the second frame as it hit .256 as a unit.
 
The Knights put the match away in the third, jumping out to a 6-0 lead for the second straight set. Sabatini picked up a pair of kills in the opening run and Cirigliano posted two service ace to spark the Mount.
 
Brooklyn used a 7-1 spurt in the middle of the set to close to within three points, but the Knights finished off the victory with an 8-3 run. Junior Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.Y.) led the closing charge with three kills over the final eight points.
 
The Knights hit .290 in the final frame on Wednesday, receiving five kills and a .571 attack percentage from Williams. Sabatini posted half of her kill total in the third set, hitting .429 in the stanza for the Knights.
 
Sabatini added six digs, two blocks and a service ace to her kill total against Brooklyn, while Cirigliano closed out a strong overall night with four service aces and nine digs.
 
Burke, Spinelli and Williams each finished the night with seven kills for Mount Saint Mary, with Williams hitting .385 on the night and Spinelli posting a .333 attack percentage. Spinelli added four digs and a total block in the win.
 
Kim Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Maddock both handed out 18 assists on the night, with Gries chipping in with five digs. Madelyn Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) paced the Knights with 12 digs and added a pair of service aces.
 
Brooklyn was led by eight winners from Sarina Rozek who added nine digs for the Bulldogs. Monieath Pen handed out 16 assists and Jailene Paredes paced all players with 19 digs in the match.
 
The Knights hit a season-high .205 in the match, posting 43 kills to the Bulldogs'20. The Mount also recorded a season-high 11 service aces on the night, reaching double-figures in the category for the second time this season.
 
Wednesday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 3-12 overall on the season. The Knights will return to action on Saturday when they welcome Skyline Conference rivals St. Joseph's-Brooklyn and Sarah Lawrence to the Kaplan Center. Matches are scheduled to get underway at 11:00 a.m.
