Four Tough Matches Await Mount Saint Mary At Roadrunner Invitational

Knights open event against New Paltz and Hunter on Friday

Newburgh, N.Y. – Coming off a five set win over Bard on Wednesday, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team will return to the court for four matches at the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Ramapo on Friday and Saturday. The Knights will tussle with New Paltz and Hunter to open play and will conclude the event on Saturday against the hosts and FDU-Florham.
 
At A Glance: The Knights snapped a six match losing streak on Wednesday with a hard fought 3-2 win over Bard in their first home match of the. Freshman Morgan Burke (Ringwood, N.J.) and junior Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.Y.) set career-highs in kills with 11 and 13, respectively, while senior Kristen Maddock (Medford, N.Y.) handed out a career best 44 assists.
 
Freshman Madelyn Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) reached double-figures in digs for the fourth time this season against the Raptors, lifting a career-high 17 in the win. Senior Angelia Cirigliano (Newburgh, N.Y.) also had a strong match on Wednesday, posting career-highs in digs (21) and total blocks (4) for the Knights.
 
Senior Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) leads the Knights in 2016 in kills with 54, while Maddock paces the squad in assists with 210 (6.77 per set) and service aces with 10. Barberan leads the way for the Mount through 10 matches with 85 digs.
 
Wednesday's win moved Mount Saint Mary to 2-8 overall on the season heading into the final invitational of the 2016 season.
 
Next Up: New Paltz: The Hawks enter Friday's tilt at 3-6 overall and are coming off losses in each of their last two contests, including a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Stevens on Wednesday. Morgan Roessler leads the offensive attack for New Paltz with 116 kills (3.52 per set) and is tied with Meghan Keyes for the team lead in service aces with 11. Maddie Zwickl has handed out 332 assists, good for just over 10 helpers per set, while Veronica Matedero is tops on the team in digs with 142. Brittany Tyack is one of three players with at least 10 total blocks on the year, leading the team with 29 heading into the weekend.
 
A Look At Hunter: The Hawks stand a 5-4 overall heading into Friday's opener with the hosts and have won each of their last three matches, including a four set triumph over St. Joseph's-L.I. on Tuesday. Julia Connelly leads a pair of players with at least 100 kills on the season with 127 winners, good for just shy of four per set, and also paces the squad with 21 service aces. Breanna Banske is averaging 6.52 assists per set heading into the weekend and Haley Trunkett is good for better than four digs per set after lifting 133 through the team's first nine matches.
 
Taking On The Hosts: The Knights will begin day two of the event against the Roadrunners, who hold a 6-3 overall record and are winners of their last two outings. Ramapo toppled Baruch in its last match, 3-1, after outlasting Union in five sets to close out the Union Tournament last weekend. Larysa Iwaskiw is putting together an impressive season for the Roadrunners, leading the team in kills with 203 (5.34 per set) and service aces with 18 and is tied for tops on the team with Kristen Behrens with 155 digs. Kate Shirkey and Rachel Selmore have shared the setting duties for Ramapo, with Shirkey leading the team with 190 helpers and Selmore adding 156. Emily Guzman leads the defensive attack with 19 total blocks through the team's first nine matches.
 
Familiar Foe: Mount Saint Mary will close the tournament against FDU-Florham in what will be the team's third meeting of the early season. The two sides have split the previous two matches, with the Knights posting a 3-2 win at the Scranton Invitational and the Devils sweeping the Mount on September 7 on their home floor.
 
The Devils enter the weekend tournament at 4-3 overall and are coming off a 3-0 loss to DeSales on Wednesday in their conference opener. Lauren Harris leads the way for the Devils with 82 kills, while Rachel Catena has recorded a team-high 17 service aces and lifted a team best 149 digs. Courtney Conte holds the team lead in assists with 193 (7.42 per set) and Marissa Lehnert paces the team with 14 total blocks.
 
What's Next: Following the four matches over the weekend, the Knights will begin a season-high four match home stand on Wednesday against Brooklyn College. The Mount starts Skyline Conference play on September 24 against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn and Sarah Lawrence and will round out the home stand with a non-conference tilt against Rutgers-Newark on September 27.
