Knights Fall To Scarlet Raiders, Suffer Fifth Straight Defeat

Biscone makes three saves

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team dropped its fifth straight decision on Wednesday night, falling to Rutgers-Newark by a score of 4-0. Senior goalkeeper Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) finished the night with three saves for the Knights.
 
The visitors wasted little time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on Wednesday. Sebastian Gostynski potted the eventual game winning goal off one of three assists on the night from Fabio De Sousa for a one goal edge at 5:41.
 
Rutgers-Newark spread its lead to a pair of goals in the 27th minute and later moved in front 3-0 with just over 10 minutes left before halftime. Stefano Muniz finished off a shot off the post from De Sousa at 26:53 and Carlos Castro closed the scoring in the half off of De Sousa's third assists at the 34:54 mark of the match.
 
The Scarlet Raiders held the Knights without a shot prior to halftime, outshooting them 10-0 in the opening 45 minutes, while taking the only two corner kicks in the period. Biscone made two of his three stops in the game in the opening stanza.
 
The only goal of the second half came off the foot of Alex Torres in the 55th minute to finish the scoring in the contest. Jakub Golabek fed Torres for a goal at 54:50 to give the visitors the final four goal advantage.
 
Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.), Bereket Watts (Southold, N.Y.), Matthew Minniter (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Bobby Caronia (Ossining, N.Y.) all recorded second half shots for the Knights, with Dolan and Minniter forcing saves.
 
Biscone added a save in the second half to finish with three in just over 70 minutes of work. Thomas Trainor (Patterson, N.Y.) came on to play the final 19:48 for the Knights in his second appearance of the season.
 
For the game, Rutgers-Newark held a 20-4 advantage in shots overall and a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The visitors finished with a commanding 8-2 advantage in corner kicks on the night, while each side was whistled for one offside infraction.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 1-5 overall on the season. The Knights will look to get back into the win column on Saturday when they open conference play at home against St. Joseph's-L.I. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
