Knights Gear Up For Busy Week

Women play three matches, Men one this week

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Tennis programs will be busy this week with four total matches, including three for the women. The women will play three matches on the road, traveling to Bard on Wednesday, league rival St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday and Pratt on Sunday. The men's squad will play its second home match of the fall on Thursday when it welcomes Bard to Newburgh.
 
A Look At The MSMC Women's Program: The Knights enter the week at 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Skyline play after falling to Western Connecticut 5-4 in their season opener and rebounding for an impressive 7-2 triumph against league rival Sarah Lawrence on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) has posted a pair of wins at the first singles position and is 1-1 as part of the top doubles pair.
 
Sophomore Mikayla Zaccaria (Point Lookout, N.Y.) and freshman Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) are both unblemished in singles play, with Zaccaria scoring wins at both the fourth and fifth singles spots and Vernon winning a match at the fifth and sixth position.
 
In doubles play, each of the Mount's three pairs have split their two matches. Carnovale and Alissa Gileau (East Granby, Conn.) and Dorothy Tighe (Walden, N.Y.) and Charlotte Pascual (Freeport, N.Y.) won on Saturday against Sarah Lawrence, while Zaccaria and Isabella Tartaglione (Pine Bush, N.Y.) picked up a victory in the season opener against Western Connecticut.
 
Breaking Down Bard: The Raptors have won its only match thus far in 2016, topping St. Joseph's-L.I. 5-4 on Sunday. The Raptors got wins from Amelia Tiemann, Lily Zacharias and MacKenzie Wardell in singles action, while the teams of Lily Schwartz and Harriette Slagle and Tiemann and Wardell won at the top two doubles positions.
 
Scouting St. Joseph's-L.I.: The Golden Eagles enter the week at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play heading into a conference match with Yeshiva Wednesday afternoon. St Joseph's topped William Paterson to open the season 5-4 and took down league foe Sage 7-2 before falling at Bard 5-4.
 
Against the the Pioneers in the season opener, the Golden Eagles won two of the three doubles matches and clinched the victory with triumphs at the fourth, fifth and sixth singles positions. Against Sage, St. Joseph's swept the doubles competition and dropped just the second and sixth singles matches.
 
About Pratt: The Connoneers enter the week a perfect 2-0 after picking up a pair of 6-3 victories to start the season. Pratt dropped SUNY Delhi to open the season and won by an identical score against Purchase on Sunday.
 
Amanda Twu has won each of her two singles matches at the first position and has picked up a win with Neeka Gilardian and Agata Jakubowska at the first doubles position.
 
A Look At The MSMC Men: The Mount Saint Mary men continue their fall season on Thursday after falling to Union on Saturday 8-1. Senior Matt Anastasi (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) scored the Knights' only win on the day after posting a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles.
 
Scouting Bard: The Raptors will bring a 0-2 record into Thursday's match after dropping an 8-1 decision to Union to start the fall and falling 9-0 to Skidmore on Sunday. Satchel Fisher has picked up Bard's only win of the season to date, posting a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 win at second singles against Union.
 
What's Next: Following the three match week, the Mount Saint Mary women will be off until September 23 when they play host to the College of New Rochelle. The Mount Saint Mary men will close out their fall schedule on September 28 with a home contest against Rutgers-Newark.
