Newburgh, N.Y. – Playing its first conference match of the 2016 season, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis squad cruised to a 7-2 home win over visiting Sarah Lawrence on Saturday. Freshman
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) won at first singles for the Knights, who took five of the six singles matches on the day.
Carnovale improved to 2-0 overall on the season at first singles after easing to a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Gryphons' Lena Labayen. Carnovale also teamed up with senior
Alissa Gileau (East Granby, Conn.) on an 8-1 first doubles win.
Gileau outlasted her opponent at the second singles position with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 victory and sophomore
Mikayla Zaccaria (Point Lookout, N.Y.) moved to 2-0 on the season after posting a 6-0, 6-2 fourth singles win for the Mount.
The Knights closed out singles play on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the fifth position from freshman
Miyanna Vernon (Liberty, N.Y.) and a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the sixth spot from
Dorothy Tighe (Walden, N.Y.).
In addition to the win at first doubles on Saturday, the duo of Tighe and
Charlotte Pascual (Freeport, N.Y.) cruised to an 8-1 third pair win for the Mount.
At 1-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in Skyline Conference play, the Knights will return to the court on September 14 when they travel to Bard. Match time with the Raptors is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
