Newburgh, N.Y. – After waiting a week due to the weather, the Mount Saint Mary College Softball team completed its quest for a Skyline Conference Championship on Saturday with a convincing 9-0 win over Sage. The Knights, who claimed their first conference crown since 2001, were led by four RBI from senior
Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) and
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) who won her 13
th game in the circle on her way to being named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player.
Â
Mount Saint Mary did all of its scoring in the first three innings and gave Connoly all the run support she would need with three tallies in the first frame. Connoly drove home
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) and
Amanda Almodovar (Chester, N.Y.) who singled to start the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.).
Â
The Knights added to their lead in the second inning with a pair of unearned runs. After
Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) and
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) reached on Sage miscues and Connoly walked, Dexter served a single to right field to plate Eiler and Moustouka to give the Mount a five run advantage.
Â
Connoly set Sage down in order in the bottom of the second before the Knights blew the game open with four runs on six base hits in the top of the third.
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) doubled to lead off the frame and scored the first run of the inning on an Eiler double up the left center field gap. The Mount went on to put three runners on with infield singles, including a run scoring safety from Connoly, before Dexter chased home Almodovar and Sommer with her second two-run single of the game.
Â
The Knights outhit Sage 10-3 in the game and had three players record a pair of hits in the contest. Almodovar went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Connoly went 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI and Dexter finished up 2-for-2 with four RBI. Â
Connoly, who went 3-0 in the Mount's three wins in the Championship, allowed three singles to the Gators in her 11
th complete game of the season and her third shutout of the year. She improved to 13-2 in 2016, striking out four and walking just one. She lowered her season earned run average to 1.40.
