Mount Saint Mary Edged By #16 Ithaca In NCAA Opener

Connoly works complete game, records base hit

Ithaca, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team opened the 2016 NCAA Softball Championship on Friday evening with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to #16 Ithaca. Sophomore Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) worked her team leading 12th complete game of the season in the circle and recorded one of the team's two base hits in the game.

Connoly picked up the game's first hit with a single with two outs in the first inning, but the Knights did not get another base runner until a Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) walk in the fourth and did not get their second base hit of the game until a two out single off the bat of Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) with two outs in the seventh.

Ithaca loaded the bases in both the second and fourth innings and stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fifth frames. In the second, Connoly got an infield fly, strikeout and line out to wiggle out of the bases loaded no one out jam and in the fourth got a pop up to end the Bombers' second bases loaded threat.

In the deciding sixth inning, Ithaca got a leadoff double from Alex Wright who was later pushed to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored with one out on a wild pitch. The run was the only of the game and came following Ithaca's third extra base hit of the contest.

Wright and Vanessa Brown each doubled for the Bombers, with Brown adding a triple on Friday. Brown, Wright and Casey Gavin all finished 2-for-3 in the game.

Connoly and Surdan each singled for the Knights in the game, going 1-for-3 on the day, with Dexter accounting for the team's only other base runner of the game.

Connoly fell to 13-3 on the season with her complete game effort. She worked 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on eight base hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter in lowering her season earned run average to 1.39 on the season. Laura Quicker picked up the win and moved to 14-4, striking out six in the shutout and allowing a pair of hits.

Friday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 22-11 overall on the season. The Knights will look to stay alive in the regional on Saturday when they take on Worcester State in an elimination game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
