Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team remained perfect in conference play on Saturday with a home sweep of Mount Saint Vincent by scores of 4-1 and 6-2. Sophomore
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) worked a complete game for her fifth win of the season in game one and collected three hits in the game two victory.
Mount Saint Mary opened the scoring in the home half of the second inning in the opener on a run scoring groundout from
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.). Connoly led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) before scoring on the groundout.
The Knights extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth with a pair of runs on two hits. The first three hitters of the inning reached, including
Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) who led off the frame with a walk and later scored on a fielder's choice. Connoly scored the second run of the inning on a single off the bat of
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
The Dolphins got on the board in the sixth on a run scoring double from Rachel Heizer and got the tying run to the plate, but Connoly got a foul out to end the threat.
Mount Saint Mary got the run right back in the bottom of the sixth to regain the three run advantage. With two outs and no one on base, DePasquale doubled down the left field line and later scored on a single from
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.).
The Knights outhit the Dolphins 7-5 in game one, with DePasquale going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Connoly scored twice, while Dexter scored a run and drew a pair of walks.
Connoly moved to 5-1 on the season and lowered her earned run average to 1.24 after working her fourth complete game of the season. She allowed a single run on five hits, striking out eight and surrendering just a single walk.
In game two, the Mount jumped on the visitors with two runs in its first at-bat with Dexter delivering
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) with a single and
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) scored the second run on a run scoring groundout from Barbara.
The Dolphins rallied to knot the score with two runs in the third keyed by run scoring singles from Katie Moos and Heizer before the Knights took the lead for good with a three spot in the bottom of the inning. Dexter drove in another run with a single to break the tie and Canto drove home a pair of runs with a double to push the Knights in front 5-2.
Mount Saint Mary tacked on an insurance run in the fourth when Connoly pushed Surdan across with a single to close out the scoring in the game.
Connoly, Dexter and Surdan each recorded three hits in the game, with Surdan going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Dexter went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Connoly finished up 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Moustouka closed out a strong day with two hits for the Knights.
Senior
Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) picked up her second win of the season with a complete game win in game two. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits and fanned seven in the contest.
Saturday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 8-7 overall and to 6-0 in league play. The Knights will return to action on Sunday with a home set against Yeshiva. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
