Newburgh, N.Y. – After honoring its six seniors prior to the start of play, the Mount Saint Mary College Softball team moved its conference winning streak to eight games on Sunday with 18-0 and 12-4 wins over Yeshiva. Senior
Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) worked a one-hitter in the opener with
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ripping three extra base hits in game two.
Mount Saint Mary put game one away early with six runs in each of its first two at-bats. The Knights scored in each of its four at-bats in the game and outhit the Maccabees 10-1.
The Knights recorded just two hits in the opening frame, with
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) driving in a run with a single. Surdan added a second run scoring single in the second inning and joined DePasquale and
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) with run producing base hits in the second.
Senior
Sabrina Gordek (Levittown, N.Y.) ripped a bases loaded triple in the third inning for the Mount and later drove in the Mount's final run of the game when she pushed senior
Brianne Germain (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) home with a double.
The Knights had eight different players with a hit in Sunday's opener, with Gordek going 2-for-2 with two runs and six RBI. Surdan finished up 2-for-3 with a run and a pair of RBI for the Mount. Germain scored three runs in the game with
Kate Zubicki (Kearney, N.J.),
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.),
Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) and
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) each scoring twice.
Goldbach moved her record on the season to 3-3 and won her second straight start with the complete game victory in game one. She lowered her earned run average to 4.08 with her first shutout of the season, allowing just a leadoff single in the fourth inning. She fanned nine and walked one in the outing.
After falling behind by two runs in game two, the Mount scored five times in the home half of the third to take the lead for good in the game and tacked on four more runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to seal the victory.
The big third inning was highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of DePasquale who also delivered Barbara with a triple to right center field in the fourth inning. DePasquale picked up her third RBI extra base hit with a double in the sixth for the Mount.
The Mount pounded out nine more hits in game two, led by a 3-for-4 effort from DePasquale. She scored a pair of runs and drove in three for the Knights. Dexter finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI with Barbara scoring three runs. Gordek picked up a hit and walk out of the leadoff spot and scored twice for the Knights.
Senior
Nicole Lomangino (Wantagh, N.Y.) picked up her first win of the season in game two, working 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. She struck out five in moving to 1-0 on the season.
Sunday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 10-7 overall on the season and to a perfect 8-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will return to action on April 14 when they travel to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. First pitch with the Lady Bears is set for 3:30 p.m.
