Knights Collect Sixth Straight Win With Sweep At St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

Goldbach fans 10 in game one, Connoly drives in four in game two

Bellerose, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team ran its winning streak to six games on Thursday with a Skyline Conference sweep at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, topping the Lady Bears 8-0 in five innings and 7-3. Senior Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) worked a shutout in the opener, while sophomore Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) drove in four runs in game two.
 
After being held off the board in their first two at-bats, Mount Saint Mary broke through with four runs in the top of the third. The Knights recorded five hits in the inning, including four straight singles to open the frame. Freshman Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) led off the inning with a base hit and scored the first run of the frame on an RBI single from Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.).
 
Senior Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) drove in Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly and Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) delivered Amanda Almodovar (Chester, N.Y.) with a run scoring double. Surdan closed out the scoring in the third when she came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
 
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Knights put the game away with four more runs in the fifth. Sommer delivered a run with a single and Surdan pushed home Sommer and Moustouka with a two-run single to finish off the scoring in the game.
 
Sommer and Surdan each picked up three hits in the opener, with Sommer scoring twice and Surdan driving in three runs. Moustouka went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in game one with Canto and Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) each ripping a double.
 
Goldbach won her third straight start in game one and struck out a season-high 10 for the Knights. She moved to 4-3 on the season and dropped her earned run average to 3.68.
 
In game two, the Mount fell behind 3-1 after one inning, before evening the score in the third and pulling in front for good in the game in the fifth. Sommer scored on a sacrifice fly in the third and Connoly drove in the tying run with an infield single.
 
In the four run fourth inning, Dexter delivered a run when she was hit with a pitch and Connoly ripped a bases loaded double that drove home Dexter, Surdan and Sommer.
 
The Knights finished game two with 10 hits, with Sabrina Gordek (Levittown, N.Y.), Connoly and Moustouka all recording a pair of safeties. Connoly delivered four RBI with Dexter going 1-for-1 with a triple, a run scored and three RBI. Sommer and Gordek each scored twice in the win for the Knights.
 
In addition to her big day at the plate, Connoly came on to record her sixth win of the season in relief to secure the sweep. She worked the final 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. Colleen Dunn (Bellmore, N.Y.) made the start and did not allow an earned run in 3.0 innings. She fanned four and walked three in her fifth start of the season.
 
Thursday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 12-7 overall on the season and to a perfect 10-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will continue a busy week on Friday when they travel to Sarah Lawrence. First pitch in Bronxville is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
