Bronxville, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team ran its winning streak to eight games and remained unblemished in league play with a pair of road wins at Sarah Lawrence on Friday. The Knights recorded nine hits in a 9-0 game one win and exploded for 19 safeties in a 13-2 game two victory.
The Knights did not get on the board until the fourth inning in game one, plating seven runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Knights picked up six of their nine hits in the game in the big fourth inning, with
Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) leading off the frame with a home run. Following a
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) single, sophomore
Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) connected on a round tripper to push the Knights in front 3-0.
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.),
Amanda Almodovar (Chester, N.Y.) and
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) all added RBI base hits in the fourth inning, with Sommer and Almodovar picking up run scoring singles in the fifth to close out the scoring in the game.
Seven Mount Saint Mary starters picked up a hit in game one, with Sommer and Almodovar collecting two hits each and two RBI each.
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) and
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each scored twice and Canto finished with a run and a pair of RBI in the win.
Sophomore
Colleen Dunn (Bellmore, N.Y.) worked her fourth complete game of the season and moved to 2-3 on the season in the circle. She allowed just a pair of hits and struck out 10 batters in the victory.
The Knights got off to a fast start in game two, plating six runs in their first at-bat to break the game open early. Sommer opened the scoring on a double steal of home with Connoly blasting a two-run home run and Sommer driving in DePasquale and Barbara with a double.
A
Kathryn Eiler (Merrick, N.Y.) run scoring single in the second spread the lead to 7-0, before the Mount put the game away with two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to complete the sweep.
Kate Zubicki (Kearney, N.J.) hit a run scoring double in the fifth and an RBI single in the fifth for the Knights.
Six Mount Saint Mary players finished with multiple hits in the game, led by a 4-for-5 performance from Connoly who scored twice and drove in three runs. Almodovar recorded two hits and scored twice with Sommer picking up two more hits and driving in two more runs.
Dunn evened her record at 3-3 on the season with her second complete game of the day. She worked 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits, while striking out eight.
Friday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 14-7 overall and to a perfect 12-0 in conference play. The Knights will return to action at home on Saturday when they play host to Purchase. First pitch with the Panthers is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
