Knights Edged In Overtime Heartbreaker Against Stockton

The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team scored four fourth quarter goals to force overtime, but were edged in the extra frame by visiting Stockton on Saturday by a score of 13-12. Sophomore Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) totaled eight points in the loss for the Knights.
 
The game was tightly contest throughout, with the visitors holding a one goal lead after the first period and a two goal advantage at halftime. Mount Saint Mary never led in the opening 30 minutes, but battled back from a 9-5 deficit with goals from Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) and Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) late in the second stanza to pull to within two goals at the intermission.
 
De Meo picked up a goal and a pair of helpers in the first half. The Knights were outshot prior to the break 25-14 and were edged in groundballs 27-15. Each team scored a man-up goal prior to halftime on Saturday.
 
The third quarter featured just three total goals, with Stockton scoring twice, before the Knights held the Ospreys to just a single goal in the fourth period. De Meo scored three of the Knights' four goals in the final stanza of regulation, knotting the score at 12-12 with 80 seconds left in regulation.
 
Stockton picked up the eventual game winning goal late in the first overtime period when Mike Caposella potted his 26th goal of the season with 2:40 left in the frame. The goal was his second of the contest.
 
De Meo finished the game with five goals and three assists for the Knights and became the first Mount Saint Mary player to surpass 80 points in a season, finishing with a single season record of 85 on the season. He led the team in assists with 47 and through two seasons he ranks fourth all time at the Mount in points with 135.
 
Kugler posted a pair of goals on Saturday, finishing with a team-high with a team-high 42 goals. Sebastian Cina Jr. (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Joseph Rizzotti (East Meadow, N.Y.) each collected a goal and an assist in the game.
 
Kyle Russo ((Commack, N.Y.) rounded out the game with five groundballs, with six different Knights causing a turnover in the game.
 
Stockton was led by three goals and four points from Tommy Gallo, with Tyler Bollard winning 22 face-offs and collecting 11 groundballs.
 
Sophomore Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made 15 saves in goal for the Knights and matched the game-high with 11 groundballs, while Pat Quinn made five stops in the win for Stockton.
 
Overall in the game, Mount Saint Mary was outshot 53-32 and won the groundball battle 52-41. The Ospreys won 22 of the 28 face-offs taken with senior Brendan Nestola (Merrick, N.Y.) winning five draws for the Knights.
 
Saturday's loss ends Mount Saint Mary's season at 10-6 overall and 1-5 in Skyline Conference play.
 
Game Notes: Prior to the game, Mount Saint Mary honored its six member senior class. Honored prior to face-off were: Anthony Mielnicki (Howell, N.J.), Steven Fabrizio (Geneva, N.Y.), Joe Pille (Oakland, N.J.), Nestola, Cina and Mike Hargraves (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).
