Baseball Bested By Vassar

Fragomeni, Pepe record hits

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team closed out its non-conference schedule on Wednesday afternoon with an 11-1 road loss at Vassar. Kristopher Fragomeni (Beacon, N.Y.) and Vincenzo Pepe (Middletown, N.Y.) each finished with a hit for the Knights.
 
After falling behind by a run in the first, the Knights battled back to knot the score at 1-1 in the top of the second inning. Fragomeni led off the frame with a double and later scored on an error for the Mount's lone run of the game. The Knights' only other hit in the contest came on a Pepe single with one out in the second.
 
The Brewers kept pressure on the Knights the entire game, scoring in all but two innings on Wednesday. Vassar took the lead of good in the game with a run in the third and added two runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings and three runs in the seventh. The eventual game winning running was pushed across in the third on a double from Nick Johnson.
 
Vassar outhit Mount Saint Mary 16-2 in the game and featured five players with at least two hits in the contest. Matt Hernandez finished up 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI, while Eric Strickland went 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs and an RBI.
 
Fragomeni ripped his fifth double of the season and scored the team's only run, with Pepe finishing 1-for-3. Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) drew a pair of walks in the game, while Louie Rivera (Linden, N.J.) and Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) each stole a base.
 
Riley Stong (Newburgh, N.Y.) took the loss for the Knights after allowing four earned runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out four and walked one in falling to 0-2 on the season. Jesse Mulham picked up the win for Vassar, allowing one run on two hits in 6.0 innings. John Madsen earned the save with three scoreless innings of relief.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 13-22 overall on the season. The Knights will return to action on Thursday night when they resume the protested game two at Purchase. The resumption of the game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
