Softball Closes Regular Season With Sweep At Farmingdale State

Sommer drives in five in game one win

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team closed out the 2016 regular season on Saturday with a road conference sweep at Farmingdale State, topping the Rams 7-2 and 4-3. Junior Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) drove in five runs in the opener and senior Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) homered in game two.

The Knights got all the scoring they would need in the second inning of game one, plating three runs on a pair of hits. Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got the Knights on the board with a one-out RBI single with Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) adding a run scoring base hit before Sommer delivered Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly.

Mount Saint Mary opened a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning when Sommer drove in Moustouka and DePasquale with a double and she drove in two more runs in the sixth with a triple to extend the Knights' lead to 7-0.

DePasquale finished the opener 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI, with Moustouka and Sommer each collecting a pair of hits. Each player doubled, with Sommer driving in five and Moustouka adding a run and an RBI. Barbara scored twice for the Knights in the win.

Sophomore Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) picked up the complete game win and moved to 9-2 on the season for the Knights. She equaled her season-high with 10 punch outs, allowing two runs on five hits.

In game two, the Mount trailed by a run twice before jumping in front for good with two runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh. After falling behind 1-0 in the second, Sommer brought the Knights even in the fifth with a triple that delivered Sabrina Gordek (Levittown, N.Y.) with the tying run.

Farmingdale State moved back in front by a run in the home half of the inning, but following a Connoly single to lead off the sixth, Dexter blasted her third home run of the season to push the Knights in front 3-2. The Mount added an important insurance run in the seventh when Sommer was forced home on a bases loaded walk.

Farmingdale put a run on the board in the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but Connoly got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat and secure the key conference victory.

Sommer finished a strong day by going 3-for-4 in game two with a run and an RBI, while Amanda Almodovar (Chester, N.Y.) finished up 2-for-4. Dexter drove in three runs for the Knights and went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) took a no decision after working 4.1 innings and striking out eight. Connoly picked up her 10th win of the season in relief, throwing 2.2 innings and fanning three.

Saturday's sweep pushes Mount Saint Mary to 19-10 overall on the season and to 16-2 in league play. The Knights will return to action in the conference tournament on Friday. Game times, location and opponent will be announced when the information becomes available.
