Men’s Lacrosse Upended At Maritime

Gallagher scores five times

Throggs Necks, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team dropped its second straight Skyline Conference contest on Wednesday with a 16-11 road loss at Maritime. Sophomore Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) scored five times for the Knights and Brodie Nuzzi (Levittown, N.Y.) caused a team-high three turnovers.
 
The Knights quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead against the Privateers and went on to score six times in the first period, including two tallies inside the first five minutes of play. Gallagher got the Knights on the board 1:05 into the game, while sophomore Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) assisted on half of the team's first quarter tallies.
 
Maritime got on the board with 3:30 left in the first frame and a after a Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) marker late in the first stanza, ripped off nine straight goals to open a 10-6 lead heading into halftime. The Knights did not score in the second period on Wednesday and were outshot by the Privateers 16-3 in the quarter.
 
After 30 minutes of play, Maritime held a 26-12 advantage in shots, a 31-10 edge in groundballs and won 12 of the 18 face-offs taken. Nick Pellegrino scored four times for Maritime in the second period to lead the first half offensive attack for the Privateers.
 
Coming out of the break, the Knights scored three of the first four goals of the third quarter, with De Meo scoring once and assisting on a man-down goal from Earle. After being outscored 4-3 in the third, Maritime scored three of the four goals in the fourth quarter to spread their advantage to the final five goal decision. Pellegrino finished with a goal and a helper for Maritime in the final stanza.
 
De Meo led the Knights with six points, finishing the game with a pair of goals and four assists to go along with a groundball. Gallagher potted a team-high five goals and chipped in a groundball, while Earle finished with three goals and an assist.
 
Nuzzi added a team-high five groundballs to his caused turnover total, with Kyle Russo (Commack, N.Y.) rounding out the day with a pair of caused turnovers.
 
Maritime featured six players with at least two points, led by six from Pellegrino. Matt Hayes had a strong night with 11 groundballs after going 22-for-30 in face-offs.  
 
Sophomore Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots for Mount Saint Mary and collected three groundballs in the loss. Maritime goalie, Brendan McNally, closed the night with 11 stops.
 
For the game, Maritime outshot Mount Saint Mary 45-33 and dominated groundballs 55-20 and face-offs 22-8. Brendan Nestola (Merrick, N.Y.) won all eight face-offs for the Knights.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 10-4 on the season and to 1-3 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Montclair State on Saturday. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
