De Meo Sets Single Season Points Record In Win Over Western Connecticut

De Meo sets new single season record with five points

Newburgh, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) set a new single season program record for points on Wednesday with a goal and four assists in a 17-6 non-conference home win over Western Connecticut State. De  Meo had 65 points through 12 games, eclipsing the previous mark of 63 set in 2012.
 
The Knights never trailed after scoring the first three goals of the game and used goals from Kenneth Atkins (Wallkill, N.Y.) and Vincent Escudero (Bridgewater, N.J.) in the final minute of the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead into the intermission.
 
Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) scored three of the Knights' seven goals over the opening 30 minutes, as the Mount outshot Western Connecticut 20-11 in the first half. The Mount also held a 24-17 edge in groundballs over the first two periods and won nine of the 13 face-offs contested.
 
Coming out of the break, Gallagher scored back-to-back goals to push the Knights in front 9-4 and after a Colonial goal with just over a minute left in the third period, ripped off the final five goals of regulation time to close out the scoring. Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.), Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Joe Pille (Oakland, N.J.) all scored man-up goals over that stretch for Mount Saint Mary.
 
The Knights outscored Western Connecticut 10-2 after halftime, outshooting the Colonials 20-10 in the second half. Gallagher and Kugler each potted a pair of goals for the Knights after the break.
 
De Meo moved past Nick Findlay who posted 63 points during the 2012 campaign after registering his 31st goal of the season and adding four helpers. He closed out a strong game for the Knights with three groundballs.
 
Gallagher paced Mount Saint Mary with five goals and added three groundballs, while Earle, Escudero and Kugler all scored twice. Earle added two assists for the Mount to close out a four point game.
 
Freshman Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) paced Mount Saint Mary with five groundballs in the game to go along with a pair of caused turnovers, while Kyle Russo (Commack, N.Y.) finished with a team-high three caused turnovers and four groundballs.
 
Western Connecticut was led by three goals and four points from Nate Wilson and got a game-high six groundballs from Cullen Roberts.  Kevin Coyle and Roberts each caused three turnovers for the Colonials.
 
Sophomore Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) rounded out the game with eight saves for the Knights, while Patrick Tynan finished up with eight stops for Western Connecticut.
 
Overall, Mount Saint Mary held the advantage in shots 40-21, groundballs 43-30 and face-offs 17-9. Senior Brendan Nestola (Merrick, N.Y.) finished the game 15-for-19 at the 'x' for the Knights.
 
Wednesday's win gives Mount Saint Mary double figures in victories for the first time in program history and moves it to 10-2 overall. The Knights will return to league play on Saturday when they play host to Kean. Face-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
