Fishkill, N.Y. – Junior right handed pitcher
Kevin Duffy (Wallingford, Conn.) worked his fourth career complete game and picked up his first win of the season on Saturday in a 4-2 win over Albertus Magnus, the team's initial win of the 2016 season.
Duffy moved to 1-1 on the season with 3.52 earned run average following Saturday's performance. He surrendered two earned runs on seven hits in the game, fanning six Albertus Magnus hitters and did not allow a walk. Following a two-run fifth for the Falcons, Duffy allowed just two base runners the rest of the outing.
After falling behind 2-0 in the fifth, the Mount battled back to within a run in the home half of the inning. Albert Estwick Jr (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) recorded a one out single and was later chased home on a triple to left field off the bat of
Louie Rivera (Linden, N.J.). The run was the first for the Knights in a span of 15 innings.
The score remained 2-1 heading to the bottom of the eighth when the Knights scratched out three two-out runs.
Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) started the rally when he was hit with a pitch with two-out and no one on base. A single from
Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and a walk from
Blake Keenan (East Fishkill, N.Y.) loaded the bases for the Knights.
Following a pitching change, Papineau crossed with the tying run after
Tom Huvane (East Chester, N.Y.) was hit with a pitch and the eventual game winning run came home when a popup off the bat of
Ryan Hayes was dropped, allowing Keenan and Cahill to both score.
Leading 4-2, Duffy retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out two batters and getting a sliding play from Keenan in foul territory.
Rivera, Papineau, Cahill, Estwick and Hayes all recorded one hit in the game for the Knights, with Papineau, Cahill, Keenan and Estwick scoring the runs for the Mount. Rivera and Huvane each picked up RBI in the tilt and Rivera and Papineau each swiped a bag for the Knights.
The visiting Falcons got a 2-for-3 effort from Mike Saia and received triples from Justin Poirier, Ted Gravel and Michael Terzi. Malachi Emond took the tough luck loss, working 7.2 innings in his season debut, striking out five.
Saturday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 1-6 overall on the season. The Knights will return to action for a non-conference doubleheader against New Paltz at Dutchess Stadium on March 12.
