Mount Saint Mary Swept At Manhattanville

Canto homers in game one

Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Manhattanville on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Valiants by scores of 4-1 and 8-0. Sophomore Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) homered in game one and junior Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) totaled three hits on the day.
 
Manhattanville would get all the scoring it needed in Wednesday's opener with a pair of runs in its first at-bat. Alicia Marino drove in both runs with a single with one out in the inning. The Valiants would tack on single runs in the fourth and sixth innings on a Sophia Chapelone single and an Aarin Hartenstein home run.
 
Mount Saint Mary got on the board in its final at-bat in game one when Canto connected on her second home run of the season. The round tripper came with the Mount down to their final strike in the game, with Canto driving in her fifth run of the season.
 
Sommer picked up two hits out of the leadoff spot in the opener, going 2-for-3. Canto also went 2-for-3 for the Knights, with Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) and Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also picking up base hits.
 
Marino led the Valiants by going 2-for-3 with two RBI, with Chapelone, Hartenstein and Alexis Ventarola all recording a hit and a run scored.
 
Senior Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) suffered the loss in game one and fell to 1-3 on the season after working her third complete game of the year. She allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out four. Alycia Feeney picked up the win, her 10th of the season, allowing the single run on six hits.
 
The Valiants got off to another quick start in game two, plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Desiree Buboi opened the scoring with an RBI single and Marino connected on a grand slam to push Manhattanville in front 5-0. Julianna Orrico closed out the scoring in the frame with a solo home run.
 
Manhattanville plated the final two runs of the game in the second when Hartenstein plated a pair with a single to center field.
 
Mount Saint Mary was outhit 13-4 in game two, with Manhattanville featuring three players with multiple hits in the game. Chapelone went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Orrico finished up 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Buboi recorded two hits and scored twice.
 
The first four hitters in the Mount Saint Mary lineup each recorded one hit, with Sommer, Amanda Almodovar (Chester, N.Y.), Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) and Dexter all posting singles.
 
Sophomore Colleen Dunn (Bellmore, N.Y.) suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs on 13 hits. Orrico picked up the win for Manhattanville, moving to 7-0 on the season.
 
Wednesday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-7 overall on the season. The Knights will return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. First pitch with the Lady Bears is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
