Knights Sneak Past Cazenovia, Set Program Record For Wins In A Season

Kugler totals five points in victory

Cazenovia, N.Y. – Sophomore Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored four goals and classmate Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) totaled four points, as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team picked up a 15-12 road win at Cazenovia on Tuesday. The victory, the Mount's eighth of the year, sets a new program record for triumphs in a season.
 
After a tightly contested first period that saw the Knights hold a 5-4 lead after 15 minutes, the Mount clamped down and outscored the Wildcats 5-1 in the second stanza. Kugler and Earle scored back-to-back goals to open the period and the Knights scored three times in the final 1:37 of the first half to take a 10-5 lead into the intermission.
 
Mount Saint Mary outshot Cazenovia 21-16 over the first 30 minutes of action, while the Wildcats took a slim 15-13 edge in groundballs and an 11-6 advantage in face-off wins.
 
The Wildcats stormed out of the break on Tuesday, scoring five of the first six goals of the third quarter to pull to within 11-10 with 3:57 left in the first frame. Kugler tallied a man-up goal early in the frame and added his second goal of the quarter with 1:35 left to give the Knights a 12-10 advantage.
 
Leading 12-11 after three periods, Mount Saint Mary gained some breathing room with back-to-back goals from Brodie Nuzzi (Levittown, N.Y.) and Earle to open a 14-11 lead with 13:24 left in regulation. Cazenovia pulled to within two goals with just over five minutes left in regulation, but Michael Romanik (Hicksville, N.Y.) sealed the victory with a tally at the 1:50 mark of the fourth quarter.
 
Kugler tallied five times on 10 shots Tuesday and chipped in a pair of groundballs and two caused turnovers. Earle rounded out the day with three goals and a helper, while Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.)  totaled five points on two goals and three assists.
 
Nuzzi led the team with eight groundballs on Tuesday, adding a goal and a helper, while Brendan Nestola (Merrick, N.Y.) won 12 face-offs and scooped two groundballs.
 
The Wildcats received three goals each from Joe Timm and Beandon Maxon, while Chris Hoover picked up eight groundballs and caused two turnovers. Casey Trejo won 16 face-offs for Cazenovia and collected a game-high nine groundballs.
 
Sophomore Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Mount Saint Mary, stopping 14 shots. He reached double-figures for the third straight game and fourth time this season. Alex Delevan took the loss with 10 saves for Cazenovia.
 
Cazenovia rounded out the game with the edge in shots 40-36, shots on goal 26-25 and groundballs 25-24. Each team scored two goals with the man advantage and Mount Saint Mary finished the day 19-for-21 in clearing chances.
 
Tuesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 8-1 overall on the season. The Knights will return home on Friday when they welcome Farmingdale State to Newburgh for the Skyline Conference opener. Face-off with the Rams is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
