Ft. Myers, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College Softball squad opened play in Florida on Tuesday with a split with St. Olaf, dropping game one 4-3 and rebounding for an 8-4 victory. Five Knights posted multiple hits in the game two win and senior
Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) picked up her first win of the season.
In Tuesday's opener, Mount Saint Mary jumped in front with three runs in the top of the first inning.
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) drove in a run with a single, with
Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) driving in a run on a sacrifice fly and
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) delivering a run with a groundout.
The three run lead held until the home half of the third inning when St. Olaf evened the score at 3-3. Jessica Bentley drove in all three runs with a home run. St. Olaf produced the eventual game winning run in their next at-bat on a run scoring single from Maggie Casper.
Mount Saint Mary outhit St. Olaf 8-4 in the contest, but half of the oppositions hits went for extra bases. Surdan and
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) each picked up a pair of hits for the Knights and each scored a run.
Sophomore
Colleen Dunn (Bellemore, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the circle and fell to 1-1, working her second complete game of the season. She fanned 12, allowing just one earned run on four hits. Alex Lopez picked up the win, striking out five and not allowing a walk.
In game two, the Knights found themselves down 4-0, but rallied for three runs in the home half of the third inning and then exploded for five more tallies in the forth. The third inning was highlighted by a two-run single from
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) and
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knotted things up with a leadoff home run in the fourth.
Surdan added a two-run double for the Knights in the big fourth inning and scored a run on a Connoly single that closed out the scoring in the game.
Sommer led five players with multiple hits in game two, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Knights. Surdan finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a pair of RBI, with
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.), Barbara and
Sabrina Gordek (Levittown, N.Y.) and recording a pair of hits.
Goldbach picked up her first win of the season and moved to 1-1 after working 5.0 innings and striking out four. She surrendered four runs on seven hits in the outing.
At 5-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary continued play in Florida on Wednesday. Stats from the doubleheader with Manchester will be supplied when they become available.
