Taylor Canto (Walden, N.Y.) hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning in game one and
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) delivered the game winning hit in the bottom of the seventh in game two as the Mount Saint Mary College Softball team swept St. Joseph's-L.I. on Sunday by scores of 4-2 and 4-3.
The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener in the first inning when
Chelsea Dexter (Beacon, N.Y.) doubled home
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) and later scored on a
Cindy Connoly (Walden, N.Y.) single to give the Knights the quick two run advantage.
St. Joseph's would rally to tie the score on a pair of solo home runs, with Megan Leun hitting a round tripper in the fifth and Brianne Cinquemani connecting on a solo shot in the sixth to tie the score at 2-2.
The Knights would regain the final two run advantage in the sixth with a two-out rally.
Courtney Barbara (Fishkill, N.Y.) drew a two-out walk and later scored what proved to be the game winning run on Canto's two-run shot to center field. The blast was the Mount's first hit since the first inning.
Canto finished the game 1-for-2 with her two RBI with Sommer, Dexter and Barbara adding runs scored. Canto added a walk in the game for the Knights.
Lindsey Corriss went 3-for-4 for the Golden Eagles in the opener with Leun and Cinquemani adding runs and RBI for St. Joseph's.
Connoly picked up the win in the circle with a complete game effort, allowing two runs on nine hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out eight in moving to 2-0. Mallory McClafferty fanned six in the loss for the visitors.
The Knights struck early again in game two, when
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) scored an unearned run to give the Mount an early 1-0 advantage. The Mount scratched out just one run, despite getting four hits in the frame and stranded the bases loaded.
The Golden Eagles knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the second on a McClafferty home run and later took their first lead of the day with a pair of runs in the fifth. Kristen Arbiter and McClafferty produced run scoring base hits in the inning for the Golden Eagles.
Mount Saint Mary got a run closer in the home half of the fifth when Connoly connected on a two-out home run and used another two-out rally to walk off with the win. With two on base and two outs,
Nicolette Moustouka (Seaford, N.Y.) scored the tying run on an error and Barbara crossed with the game winning run on a sharp single to center field off the bat of DePasquale.
Dexter finished off game two 3-for-4 at the plate with Barbara and DePasquale each recording two hits for the Knights. Surdan doubled for the Knights and scored a run.
Connoly collected her third win of the season in relief on Sunday after working a scoreless seventh inning.
Victoria Goldbach (Levittown, N.Y.) made the start and worked 6.0 solid innings, surrendering three runs on six hits while striking out six. Lauren Buturla suffered the loss, giving up one earned run in 6.2 innings pitched.
At 4-1 overall and 4-0 in league play the Knights will begin play on their Florida trip on Tuesday with a doubleheader against St. Olaf. First pitch is Ft. Myers is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
