Newburgh, N.Y. – Sophomore
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made a season-high 16 saves and
Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) added five points as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team held off Centenary by a score of 10-9 on Saturday afternoon. The win pushes Mount Saint Mary's winning streak to seven games and equals the program's record for wins in a season.
The Knights fell behind 3-0 after 15 minutes of action on Saturday, before rallying with five unanswered goals in the second period to carry a 5-3 lead into the intermission. Sebastian Cina, Jr. (Colts Neck, N.J.) got the Knights on the board early in the second quarter before De Meo scored twice and assisted on two other goals in the stanza. His second goal of the period came at the horn to close out the scoring in the first half.
Over the first 30 minutes of action, Mount Saint Mary held a 19-14 advantage in shots, including a 15-8 edge in the second period. Groundballs went to the Knights 24-23 prior to the break, while Centenary won five of the eight face-offs taken in the first half.
The two teams split four goals in the third quarter on Saturday and Centenary scored four of the seven goals in the final period. The Cyclones would tie the score at 7-7 and 8-8, but could not pull in front of the Knights.
Kenneth Atkins (Wallkill, N.Y.) scored the eventual game winning goal with 2:12 left to play as the Knights saw Centenary score with 12 ticks left and win the ensuing face-off before turning the ball over to end the threat.
De Meo scored three times and posted a pair of assists to lead the offensive attack and added six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Atkins scored three times for the Knights and
Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) chipped in with a pair of markers.
Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and
Joe Moschetto (East Islip, N.Y.) each picked up four groundballs in the game and
Brendan Nestola (Merrick, N.Y.) won eight face-offs for the Knights.
Centenary was paced by four players who potted a pair of goals and Michael Muff who assisted on four goals and scooped six groundballs. Nolan Gottshall won 11 face-offs and picked up eight groundballs in the game for the Cyclones.
Doerr finished the day with at least 10 saves for the second time this season, making 13 stops for the Knights in the second half, including seven in the fourth period. He picked up four groundballs in the tilt as he moved to 7-0 on the season. Kevin Switzer rounded out the day with 14 saves for Centenary.
Centenary outshot the Mount overall 46-34, but held just a 25-24 edge in shots on goal. The Cyclones picked up two more groundballs than the Knights and won 12 of the 20 face-offs taken. The Knights were 20-for-22 in clearing chances, while Centenary went 16-for-24.
At 7-0 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary will be off until March 23 when it plays host to local foe Vassar. Opening face-off at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
