Cahill, Pepe record two hits each in loss

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team closed out its season opening series at St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday with a 5-2 loss to the Seahawks. Senior Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and junior Vincenzo Pepe (Middletown, N.Y.) each finished the game with a pair of hits for the Knights.

After falling behind 3-1 early on Sunday, the Knights battled back to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Cahill, Blake Keenan (Fishkill, N.Y.) and Rob Pecerillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) drew three straight walks to load the bases with no one out, with the lone run of the inning coming when Cahill scored on a double play.

St. Mary's broke open the 3-1 game in the home half of the sixth frame with two runs on three base hits. Hayden Ferington led off the inning with a double and later scored on a one out single from Colin Thatcher. Thatcher later scored on a double from Holden Marshall to give the Seahawks a 5-1 lead after six innings.

Mount Saint Mary scratched out its second run of the day in the top of the seventh when Albert Estwick Jr (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) crossed on a fielder's choice. Cahill would give the Mount two runners on with two out after a single, but the Knights could not pull closer than the 5-2 final.

Cahill closed out a strong weekend by going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, giving him two multiple hit games in three outings in 2016. Pepe finished up 2-for-4 for the Knights in Sunday's finale. Kristopher Fragomeni (Beacon, N.Y.) recorded the team's lone RBI in the contest.

Holden Marshall finished off the game 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for St. Mary's with Anthony Cangelosi finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI.

Junior right hander Kevin Duffy (Wallingford, Conn.) suffered the loss on Sunday after allowing three earned runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work. He walked two batters and struck out five for the Knights in his season debut. Stephan Sookdeao (Carmel, N.Y.) and Sean Betterly (East Meadow, N.Y.) each made their season debut and Nick Peterson (Stormville, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut in relief for the Knights.
