Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Tennis team saw its fall season come to a close on Wednesday with a hard fought 5-4 conference loss to visiting Purchase. Freshman
Michelle Carnovale (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored her 14
th singles win, while sophomore
Mikayla Zaccaria (Point Lookout, N.Y.) finished the season unbeaten at fourth singles.
After dropping her first singles decision of the season in her last outing, Carnovale rebounded for a convincing 6-0, 6-0 first singles win on Wednesday against the Panthers. The win moved her to 14-1 on the season at the top flight and is just five wins shy of the single season record at the Mount.
Zaccaria finished off a strong fall campaign for the Mount with a 6-1, 6-3 win to run her fourth singles record to a perfect 7-0 on the season. Overall, Zaccaria is 9-5 on the season and 4-3 against Skyline Conference opponents.
Dorothy Tighe (Walden, N.Y.) scored the Knights' other singles victory of the season on Wednesday, outlasting her opponent from Purchase by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 10-7. The victory moved her singles record to 6-3 on the season, including three wins against conference opponents.
The Mount also scored a win at the top doubles position on Friday with Carnovale and Zaccaria teaming up for a tough 8-6 victory. The duo has played together in a pair of matches this season, winning both for the Knights.
Wednesday's loss closes the fall season at 5-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
