Knights Score Key Conference Victory At Mount Saint Vincent

McKeever nets two goals in win

Riverdale, N.Y. – Bridget McKeever (Wallkill, N.Y.) scored twice and Nicole Cavallo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) added a goal as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team traveled to the College of Mount Saint Vincent and came away with an important 3-1 Skyline Conference victory on Wednesday.

The Knights got on the board early when Cavallo potted her fourth goal of the season in the 10th minute of the game. She took a pass from Maeve O'Sullivan (Garden City Park, N.Y.) and tucked a shot under the bar at 9:47 to give the Knights and early one goal advantage.

The Dolphins would even the score just over six minutes later when Kelly Gibison found the back of the net for the seventh time this season. She headed in a cross from Erin Daily in the 16th minute to bring Mount Saint Vincent even at a goal apiece.

The game would remain tied until the final minute of the first half when McKeever found the back of the net with her first game winning goal of the season. She knocked in a shot from 25 yards out at 44:16 to give the Knights the lead for good in the game.

Mount Saint Mary went into the intermission with a 9-6 advantage in shots and took each of the three corner kicks awarded in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) made a pair of saves for the Mount in the opening stanza.

The Mount would hold the one goal advantage until the 77th minute when McKeever converted a penalty kick to give the Knights an insurance tally and pushed the lead to two goals. The marker was her team leading sixth of the season.

McKeever moved into the team lead in goals with her effort on Wednesday and in points with 17 on the season. Cavallo became the seventh different player for Mount Saint Mary to score four goals on the season and is one of eight different players with at least nine points. O'Sullivan picked up her second helper of the year to give her 10 points during her sophomore campaign.

Riley made five saves in the game, including one big one in the second half to keep the Knights in front by a goal. Elizabeth Martin also made five stops in the contest for Mount Saint Vincent.

Overall, Mount Saint Mary held a 13-12 advantage in shots, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Allison Jones (Merrick, N.Y.) paced the Knights with four attempts on the day. Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Wednesday's victory moves Mount Saint Mary to 6-8 overall on the season and to 5-2 in conference play. The Knights will be back in action again at home when they play host to Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
