New York, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team dropped a Skyline Conference road decision at Yeshiva on Saturday night by a score of 75-53. Freshman
T.J. Patsalos (Newburgh, N.Y.) led a pair of players in double-figures with a team-high 13 points.
Mount Saint Mary led by two points twice in the opening minutes on Saturday, before a 12-2 spurt by Yeshiva moved the home standing Maccabees in front 14-6 on a Michael Berg jumper just under eight minutes into the contest.
The Knights would get back to within four points on an
Andrew Holmes (Niskayuna, N.Y.) conversion in transition, but saw the Maccabees rip off 13 of the next 19 points to carry a 32-21 lead into the break. Yeshiva led by as many as 13 points late in the first period, moving in front 32-19 on a Judah Cohen three-pointer with 98 seconds left before halftime.
The Knights struggled from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, going just 7-for-28 overall and 0-for-5 from behind the arc. Yeshiva rounded out the first half shooting an efficient 54.2-percent and knocked in four three-point field goals, including two from Cohen.
Although the Knights trailed by double-digits throughout the second half, they battled to within 10 points after falling behind by 16 in the early stages of the second half.
Tyler McDine (Suffern, N.Y.) brought the Mount as close as it would get the remainder of the night when he hit a jumper to slice the disadvantage to 41-31 with 15:18 left in regulation time.
The Maccabees quickly spread its lead back to 15 points on a Shaje Weiss conversion and jumped in front by a game-high 22 points, the final advantage, on a Dean Pienica lay-in with 58 seconds left in the contest.
Both teams shot better than 50-percent from the floor after halftime, but Yeshiva made seven more field goals than the Mount after the break. Shelby Rosenberg scored 13 second half points, going 6-for-7 from the floor to lead the Maccabees.
Patsalos led the team and matched the game-high in scoring with 13 points after going 6-for-9 from the floor. He added five rebounds and a pair of blocks for the Knights. McDine chipped in with 11 points on the strength of a 7-for-10 effort from the free-throw line, adding two rebounds and a steal.
Sophomore
Daniel Wolff (Holtsville, N.Y.) led the team with seven rebounds and contributed seven points, while freshman
Connor Bacci (Bayside, N.Y.) handed out two assists and contributed six points off the bench.
Rosenberg did all of his scoring in the second half for Yeshiva and led three in double-figures after going 6-for-8 from the floor. Joseph Ammar and Cohen each scored 11 points, while Michael Berg led the team with eight rebounds and four assists while adding eight points.
Mount Saint Mary was held to 37-percent shooting in the game and was outscored by 10 points in the paint and by 11 points in transition. Yeshiva shot an efficient 54.5-percent for the game, making five more three-pointers than the Mount.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 7-12 overall on the season and to 5-10 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to SUNY Canton on February 3. Tip-off with the Roos is set for 5:30 p.m.
