Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary Men's Basketball team was downed at home Wednesday night by Mount Saint Vincent 77-58. Freshman
T.J. Patsalos (Newburgh, N.Y.) led the Knights with 12 points in the game, scoring in double-figures for the fourth straight game.
After the lead changed hands three times in the early going, the Dolphins jumped in front for good in the game on a Jamir Ferebee three-pointer that pushed Mount Saint Vincent in front 12-9 inside the first six minutes of the contest.
The Ferebee bucket started a 10-2 spurt for the visitors that saw them jump in front 19-11 on a pair of Ferebee free-throws. The Dolphins took an 11 point lead with just over eight minutes left in the first half and took their largest lead of the opening period, 34-17, on a Mike Mulligan free-throw with 4:28 left before the break.
Mount Saint Vincent shot an even 50-percent from the floor in the opening period on its way to a 36-25 halftime advantage. The Knights, who were led by eight first half points from
Daniel Wolff (Holtsville, N.Y.), converted at a 39.3-percent rate before the half and went 3-for-9 from three-point range.
The visitors maintained a double-figure advantage throughout the second half on Wednesday and did not allow Mount Saint Mary closer than 13 points in the final 20 minutes. Mount Saint Vincent would take a game-high 22 point lead twice in the final 7:33 of the game before taking the final 19 point decision.
Patsalos and sophomore
Tyler McDine (Suffern, N.Y.) each scored eight second half points for the Knights and combined for seven of the team's 13 field goals after halftime. The Dolphins shot just over 42-percent in the second half.
Patsalos finished the night 6-for-12 from the floor and led the team with nine rebounds, narrowly missing his third straight double-double. Wolff chipped in with 10 points, scoring in double-figures for the eleventh time this season, adding three rebounds.
Stephen Steyer (Staten Island, N.Y.) rounded out the contest with nine points and a game-high three steals.
Ferebee led five Mount Saint Vincent players in double-figures with a game-high 25 points with Mulligan posting a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Mount Saint Vincent finished the game shooting 39.3-percent from the floor and went 4-for-16 from behind the arc and 6-for-13 from the free-throw line. The visitors shot just shy of 46-percent from the field, knocking in seven three-pointers and outscoring the Knights by 10 from the free-throw line.
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-10 overall on the season and to 4-8 against Skyline Conference opponents. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Purchase on Friday evening for a conference road date with the Panthers. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
