Women’s Volleyball Struggles in Opening Weekend at Gettysburg Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team kicked off the new season with four matches across the weekend as part of the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic, hosted by Gettysburg College on Friday and Saturday. The Knights had a rough go in the tournament, dropping all four matches throughout the two-day event.
 
The Knights' suffered a 3-0 (25-8, 25-4, 27-25) defeat to McDaniel College in Friday's opener. Junior outside hitter Angelia Cirigliano (Newburgh, N.Y.), a transfer from Orange County Community College, led the Knights in their season opener with five kills and contributed a solid six digs.
 
It was the same result in Friday's second match, as the Knights dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-20) decision to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to close out the day. Junior outside hitter Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), who represented the Knights on the Skyline Women's Volleyball All-Conference First Team in 2014, threw down six kills and picked up five digs. Senior middle blocker Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) hit .455 with five kills, and also recorded a block assist.
 
The Knights fell, 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-17), to Geneva College (Pa.) in Saturday's first match. Sophomore Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.Y.) scored a team-high five kills in the match, while freshman Jennifer Hanley (Sayville, N.Y.) provided three block assists and a solo block.
 
The results stayed the same in Saturday's closer, as the Knights fell to tournament host Gettysburg, 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-9). Williams had another nice match with six kills, while senior libero Jennifer Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) scooped up a team-high 11 digs.
 
The Knights will look to pick up their first win of the season as they host Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Kaplan Center. The Knights' home opener is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
