ROCHESTER, N.Y. –The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team dropped their first play of the day Saturday, at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational. First of three matches, the Knights faced SUNY Geneseo, ending the match 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-12).
Junior outside hitter
Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Knights with 7 kills and senior middle blocker
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) had 6 kills. Senior libero
Jennifer Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) had 14 digs to start their day at RIT.
Geneseo's Courtney Cleary had a game high with 15 kills, while Bethany VanDerMeid dealt 20 assists.
In their second game of the day, the Knights lost 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-22) in a close match against Buffalo State.
The Knights kept it close with freshman setter
Kimberly Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) dishing out a game high of 24 assists. Senior libero
Jennifer Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) had 25 digs along with 5 aces. Freshman middle blocker Jen Hanley (Sayville, N.Y.) racked up 9 kills and 2 blocks for the Knights.
Buffalo State's Hannah Renaldo had 12 kills while Rachelle Kelchlin led the Bengals with 19 digs.
The team played a four set match against Nazareth College to close the RIT Invitational Saturday night. The Knights played a close game, winning the first set, but fell to the Golden Flyers 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 29-27, 25-18).
Maureen Thayer had 32 assists for Nazareth, while Cady Messmer had 16 kills and 7 aces.
The Knights were led again by senior libero
Jennifer Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) who had an impressive game high of 30 digs, her highest of the day, and dealt out 4 aces and 4 assists. Senior right side
Kaitlin O'Brien (Staten Island, N.Y.) racked up 9 digs and 3 aces for the Mount, while junior outside hitter
Rachel Sabatini had 2 aces and 9 kills.
The Knights look to play for their first win of the season Tuesday, Sept. 22 when they take on Lehman College.
