NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In a match that spanned two days due to inclement weather, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team fell to Sarah Lawrence College, 6-3, in both teams' Skyline Conference opener. The match began on Saturday, but was suspended due to rain after doubles play. The match continued Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
The Knights had the lead in doubles play after seniors
Breanna Scott (Highland Falls, N.Y.) and
Katie Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) picked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Nora Landes and Sofia Reh. Sarah Lawrence evened the match when Autumn Atkinson and Juliet Slade junior
Alissa Gileau (East Granby, Conn.) and sophomore
Mallory Menneci (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), 8-4, at flight two. Senior
Ellen Hendricks (West Point, N.Y.) and freshman
Mikayla Zaccaria (Point Lookout, N.Y.) dropped the No. 3 doubles match to Sarah Fiordaliso and Lane Garber, 8-6.
Play was then suspended on Saturday after the skies opened up. The match continued Sunday morning, early enough for each team to take on new opponents later in the day.
Scott continued a solid match by picking up a No. 1 singles victory over Landes, 6-4, 6-1. Zaccaria notched a No. 6 singles win over Moni Spancheska, 6-4, 6-4. However, Sarah Lawrence won each of the No. 2-5 singles matches to clinch the victory.
The Knights play again later on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against the College of New Rochelle on the Mount Saint Mary College Tennis Courts.
