Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short in 17-13 Loss to Hartwick

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – An early deficit proved to be the difference as the Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (4-5) fell to Hartwick College (3-6) in non-conference action Monday evening at Kaplan Field.

After some tight play through the first 15 minutes of the game, a 7-2 run by the Hawks to close out the first half put the visitors up, 11-5, heading into halftime. Six different Hawks scored in the opening frame, including three by Lauren Rosenberg. Junior midfielder Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) each scored twice for the Knights in the first half.

Hartwick scored five of the first eight goals in the second half to double up the Knights, 16-8, with 15:02 left to play. The Knights began a late run on a goal by junior defender Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) with 13:25 remaining. Scicutella followed four minutes later to cut the deficit to six. Courtney Coons scored for the Hawks to get them back on track, but that was the last time the away team scored in Monday's matchup. Scicutella scored again with 6:12 on the clock, and Duffy followed her up at the 3:57 mark to get back within five. Gattoni netted another with 2 minutes left to cut the score to 17-13, but the Knights found themselves out of time.

Rosenberg led all scorers with six points on five goals and an assist to pace the Hawks on Monday. Coons and Emily Jweid matched with three goals and two helpers each. Ally Naja scored twice and led the Hawks with five ground balls.

Gattoni, Duffy and Scicutella each scored four times for the Knights. Scicutella added an assist for a five-point night. Duffy was all over the field on Monday, leading all players with eight draw controls and seven ground balls. She fell one draw control and one ground ball short of the program single-game records for both categories.

Steph Luce picked up the win after making 10 saves for the Hawks. Freshman netminder Carly Lennon (Bellmore, N.Y.) suffered the loss for the Knights, falling to 3-4 on the season.

The Knights held a narrow 30-26 edge in shots on Monday. They also scooped up 28 ground balls to 22 for the Hawks. Both teams were even with 16 draw controls apiece and both went 17-of-22 on clear attempts.

The Knights get back to work on Wednesday, April 8, when they take a trip to Maritime College for Skyline Conference action against the Privateers. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m.
