Katie Gattoni's (Old Tappan, N.J.) long pursuit of the single-season points record, and junior midfielder
Nicole Scicutella's journey to the career assists record, finally came to fruition on Tuesday in the Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team's (7-8) 17-8 loss to local rival Vassar College (8-5) at Weinberg Field.
Gattoni scored two goals in Tuesday's loss, breaking the tie with Knight alumni Kaileen Spadaro and setting a new single-season points record with 65 this season. She also improved upon her single-season goals record, improving her total to 58 on the year. Scicutella tallied an assist in the game, putting her at 41 during her three-year career, surpassing Spadaro's career total of 40.
Vassar did not waste much time taking the lead on Tuesday, scoring three goals in the first four minutes of play. Junior defender
Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) got the Knights on the board at the 25:06 mark, but Sudney Spadinger scored less than two minutes later to put the Brewers back up by three. Duffy scored once again just a couple minutes later, but Amelia Rivoir got another back for the home team to push the lead back to three.
Gattoni scored her first of the game with 18:05 left in the half, giving her sole possession of the Knights' points record. Junior midfielder
Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored shortly after to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Brewers responded with three straight goals to close out the half with an 8-4 lead.
Isabelle Goldstein scored less than three minutes into the second half to put the home team up by five goals. Sophomore defender
Amanda Clemens (Baldwin, N.Y.) got one back for the Knights, but Vassar rebounded with two more. Gattoni then scored her second of the contest with 21:49 to play, but the Brewers potted four straight to go up by nine. Duffy and sophomore midfielder
Kayla Goman (Greenwich, N.Y.) scored two more for the Knights late in the game, but Vassar neutralized them with two more before the final buzzer for the nine-goal win.
Kate Pula picked up the win for the Brewers, stopping seven shots and allowing only six goals. Freshman goalkeeper
Carly Lennon (Bellmore, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss, but made six stops.
Goldstein tallied seven points for the Brewers on five assists and two goals. Kim Mulvehill and Hannah Cho each scored twice and assisted another goal. Storm Sideleau tallied a game-high four goals.
Duffy led the Knights with three goals and an assist for four points on the evening. Scicutella added a goal with her assists for a two-point game. She also caused a game-high five turnovers, tying the single-game record she had previously tied three days ago at Farmingdale State College.
The Knights finish up the regular season with a Skyline Conference matchup against St. Joseph's College (L.I.) on Saturday, April 25. The Knights will also celebrate Senior Day prior to Saturday's matchup, celebrating the career of Scicutella, who will be graduating a year early. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
