Women’s Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Day Before Falling to St. Joseph’s (L.I.), 19-13

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (7-9, 5-2 Skyline) celebrated the career of junior midfielder Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.), the team's only graduating player, prior to the Knights' 19-13 loss to first-place St. Joseph's College (L.I.) (11-4, 7-0 Skyline) in Skyline Conference action Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Field.

The Knights commemorated Scicutella, who will graduate in just three years, just before the start of Saturday's matchup. Scicutella owns the program's career assists record with 43, and stands third on the all-time points list with 102. She has also set numerous single-season and single-game records this season for the Knights. Scicutella had a successful first two seasons in the Blue and Black, earning a spot on the Skyline Women's Lacrosse All-Conference Second Team in her freshman season, and a spot on the First Team last year. Her season totals for those years pale in comparison to what she has done for the Knights in 2015.

The Knights hung tight with the Skyline's top team early on in Saturday's matchup, as the teams traded goals back and forth for the first 12 minutes, resulting in a 3-3 draw. The Golden Eagles slowly managed to increase its leads as the first half went on, taking a 5-3 lead after the tie, and later holding a 9-5 lead after a three-goal run. The Knights got one back to get within three, but the Eagles tallied another three in a row to go up, 12-6. The Knights scored twice more in the final minute of the opening frame, but trailed, 12-8, going into the break.

Though the Knights scored two of the first three goals of the second half, St. Joe's turned it around to score five of the next six to take an 18-11 edge. The Knights scored two in a row to end the visitors' run, but the Golden Eagles managed to tally the last goal of the game for the 19-13 win.

Heather Ferchland scored four goals and dished out a pair of assists to lead the Golden Eagles with six points on the afternoon. Ela Igdeler passed out three assists and scored once for a four-point day.

Sophomore attacker Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) scored six times on Saturday, extending her single-season program records to 64 goals and 71 points on the year. Junior defender Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) totaled five points on four goals and an assist, and also caused a team-high five turnovers and scooped up a game-high seven draw controls. She improved her single-season ground balls record to 65 and draw controls record to 83. Scicutella scored once and assisted two others for a three-point day.

Courtney Wickline got the win for the Golden Eagles, making five stops and yielding 13 goals. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Carboine (Hauppauge, N.Y.) suffered her second loss of the season after allowing 19 goals, but managed to stop nine shots.

The Knights are now locked into the No. 3 seed for the Skyline Conference Championships. They will travel to Farmingdale, N.Y. on Wednesday, April 29, for a semifinal matchup with the No. 2-seeded Rams of Farmingdale State College. The opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
