NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Sophomore attacker
Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) scored eight times on Thursday, giving her a new program single-season record of 55 goals, breaking the previous record of 51 set by Kaileen Spadaro. The Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (7-6) fell to local rival SUNY New Paltz (3-8), 23-13 at the Old Turf Field in Thursday's non-conference matchup.
The eight goals are a career best for Gattoni. In addition to the goals record, Gattoni now sits one points shy of the single-season mark of 63. Junior midfielder
Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.), tying her with Spadaro for the career record of 40, which Scicutella has reached in less than three seasons.
The Knights held the early lead in Thursday's contest, as Gattoni scored twice in the first three minutes to put the Knights up, 2-0. The Knights later went up, 4-1, after goals by Scicutella and junior defender
Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.). The Hawks then scored four straight goals to take a 5-4 lead, but it was quickly tied on Gattoni's third goal of the game.
The Hawks went on to score three straight goals for an 8-5 lead. Gattoni then scored her fourth of the game to tie the single-season record and get the Knights back within two. Later in the period, sophomore midfielder
Kayla Goman (Greenwich, N.Y.) scored the Knights' seventh goal, but the home team potted four more to take a 12-7 lead into the break.
New Paltz's Carissa Citro scored the first goal of the second half just 2:20 into the period, then Gattoni answered 45 seconds later to become the program's single-season leading scorer. Gattoni managed to score three more times, but it was nearly all Hawks the rest of the way, as they took an 11-6 advantage in the second half for a 23-13 victory.
Citro led the Hawks with nine points on seven goals and two assists in their win. Kelsey Healy scored six times for the Hawks, and Lianne Valdivia and Julia Johnson each picked up three goals and three assists for six points.
Scicutella tallied three points on a pair of goals and an assist. Junior attacker
Shannon McGuinness (Oceanside, N.Y.) totaled two points with a goal and an assist. Duffy led the Knights with 10 draw controls and four ground balls.
Jackie Ulanoff made 15 saves to pick up the win for the Hawks. Freshman goalkeeper
Carly Lennon (Bellmore, N.Y.) shouldered the loss for the Knights, but made 13 saves.
The Hawks outshot the Knights, 42-32, in Thursday's contest. They scooped up 21 ground balls compared to 16 for the Knights. The Knights won the draw control battle, 21-17.
The Knights will next play on Saturday, April 18, in a crucial Skyline Conference matchup at Farmingdale State College. The opening draw is set for 3:30 p.m.
