STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (9-10) took on the College of Staten Island (13-9) in non-conference action Tuesday evening, and fell to the Dolphins, 6-2, at Tomas D. Morales field.
The Knights got off to a fast start when senior designated hitter
Andrew Conn (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to score junior first baseman
Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) in the top of the first to give the Knights a quick 1-0 lead. However, Staten Island managed to double the Knights with a pair of runs in its first at bat, taking a 2-1 lead after one.
In the bottom of the second, Dolphins catcher Frank Sconzo stroked a solo home run to left field, putting Staten Island up, 3-1.
The Knights got back on the board in the top of the fifth when Cahill singled to left, bringing in senior third baseman
Rocco Pepe (Commack, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to one. The Dolphins did not waste any time in neutralizing the Knights' run when second baseman Nick Delprete hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run and improve the Dolphin lead to two runs.
Dolphins' left fielder Glenn Glennerster scored in the sixth after stealing third and advancing on a throwing error by freshman catcher
Adrian Peralta (New York, N.Y.), upping the Dolphins' lead to 5-2. Right fielder Frank Smith added the final run for the Dolphins on an RBI single in the eighth to reach the final score of 6-2.
Staten Island starter Juan Rodriguez improved to 2-0 on the year after tossing five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out six. Sophomore starter
Stephan Sookdeo (Carmel, N.Y.) fell to 2-1 after allowing three runs (one earned) in two innings of work.
Delprete went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Dolphins in their victory on Tuesday. Smith hit 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Sconzo batted 1-for-3 with his solo shot in the second.
Cahill went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI out of the leadoff spot for the Knights. Conn knocked in the other run in his 1-for-4 outing.
The Knights take on New Jersey City University tomorrow, April 15, in the first game of the season at the MSMC Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
