NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Junior midfielder
Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) set a new program single-game assists record as the Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (6-5, 4-0 Skyline) rolled to a 20-10 victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent (1-8, 0-4 Skyline) in Skyline Conference action Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Field.
Scicutella dished out five assists, breaking the previous record of four set by Kaileen Spadaro on two separate occasions. In addition, Scicutella improved her season total to 15 helpers, tying the single-season program mark with five regular-season contests still left to play. She scored three goals in her record-setting effort, totaling a career-best eight points.
The Knights trailed 2-1 less than five minutes into Saturday's matchup, but they quickly turned the tables and went on a nine-goal run to close out the half with a 10-2 advantage. The Dolphins got as close as seven when they trailed 17-10 with 3:20 to play, but three goals in the final three minutes gave the Knights the 10-goal victory.
Sophomore attacker
Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) inched closer to numerous program records with four goals in Saturday's win. She now has 44 goals on the season, matching her total from 2014. Junior defender
Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) turned in a five-point effort with a hat trick and a pair of assists. She also grabbed a game-high eight draw controls. Gattoni and Scicutella matched for the game-best with seven ground balls.
Shannon Steimel scored a game-high five times to lead Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday. Kelly Fraser followed with four goals, and Catherine Maas scored the other. Rachel Steimel tied for the game lead with seven ground balls.
Freshman goalkeeper
Carly Lennon (Bellmore, N.Y.) made nine saves and allowed seven goals to pick up the win for the Knights. Kacie McCormack made 18 saves, but yielded 20 goals to suffer the loss for the Dolphins.
The Knights were evidently the more aggressive team on offense, as they fired off 43 shots compared to just 20 for their opponents. They also held a 36-21 advantage in ground balls, and a 22-10 edge in draw controls.
The Knights also tied a program record with two man-down goals in Saturday's win, matching a total set back on April 17, 2010, against SUNY New Paltz.
The Knights continue Skyline play with a matchup against the Gators from The Sage Colleges at the University at Albany on Tuesday, April 14. The opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
