Men’s Lacrosse Hangs Tight Early, but Falls to Montclair State, 25-7

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse team (3-8, 0-2 Skyline) dropped a 25-7 decision to the six-time defending Skyline Champion Montclair State University (7-5, 2-0 Skyline) Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Field.

The Knights hung tight with the Red Hawks early on in Saturday's matchup, trailing by just one, 3-2, at the end of the first quarter. The Knights scored two of the first three goals in the second frame to tie the game at four goals apiece, but the Red Hawks then started to take over. After back-to-back Montclair State goals, freshman midfielder Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) sniped one home to cut the deficit back to one. The Red Hawks then went on a four-goal run to close out the first half with a 10-5 lead.

Montclair State added another goal to open the third quarter to take a six-goal advantage. Freshman midfielder Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) managed to score a man-down goal less than two minutes later, but the Red Hawks turned it around and scored five straight to take a commanding 16-6 lead. The visitors closed out the third quarter with an 18-7 edge. They went on to score the only seven goals of the fourth quarter to pick up the 25-7 victory.

Brett Mangan turned in a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists for the Red Hawks. Michael Jevic scored four times and helped out three others for a seven-point afternoon, and Michael Schreck dished our four assists and netted two for a six-point day.

Kugler scored three times and added an assist for a team-high four points on the afternoon. De Meo added an assist with his score for two points. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Michael Capetola (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) scooped up a game-high six ground balls.

Lucas Jones made seven stops to pick up the win for Montclair State. Freshman netminder Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) also made seven saves, but allowed 19 goals to suffer the loss.

The Red Hawks fired off 47 shots in Saturday's contest, while the Knights managed just 26. They also held a 39-31 edge in ground balls, but the Knights took a 19-15 advantage in face-offs.

The Knights look to get their first Skyline win and end a six-game skid when they take on Maritime College on Wednesday, April 15, at Kaplan Field. The opening face-off is slated for 7 p.m.
