Baseball Gets Swept on Second Day of Ripken Experience

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (0-4) was swept in its two games at the Ripken Experience on Tuesday, falling to York College of Pennsylvania (2-0), 3-1, and then again to Grove City College (2-3), 9-2.

Game one turned into a pitcher's duel, seeing a total of only eight hits between both teams. York grabbed the first lead in the bottom of the fourth when third baseman Michael Moore singled in designated hitter Sean Mohollen to put the Spartans up, 1-0. The Knights finally broke through in the seventh when junior right fielder Kristopher Fragomeni (Beacon, N.Y.) brought sophomore shortstop Steve Notaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) around to score on a single, tying the game at one.

Freshman starter Joe Pillitteri (Wallkill, N.Y.) unfortunately saw his terrific start turn into a loss in the seventh inning. Sophomore Kevin Duffy (Wallingford, Conn.) came on in relief, and forced a pop up, but it was dropped by the shortstop, plating two runs for the Spartans, eventually giving them the 3-1 victory.

Pillitteri tossed 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits, but fell to 0-1 with the loss. Randy Frankenfield earned the win for the Spartans, going eight innings and allowing just one run. Stephen Miele picked up a save after a perfect ninth inning to close the game. Duffy did not allow a hit or walk in his 1.2 innings of work.

Moore tallied the only RBI for the Spartans in a 1-for-3 effort. Mohollen hit 1-for-4 and scored a run.

Notaro went 1-for-2 with a double and a run for the Knights. Fragomeni batted 1-for-3 and knocked in the only run.

Game two against Grove City proved to be quite different than the Knights' opener on Tuesday, as the Wolverines posted 15 hits. First baseman Matt Waugaman got things started for Grove City with a two-run homer in the top of the first. The Knights later tied the game when freshman left fielder Louis DeAngelis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) smacked a two-run blast of his own in the bottom of the fourth.

The Wolverines took the lead back in their next at bat, when third baseman Brandon Gresh stroked a double to knock in a pair and put Grove City up, 4-2.

Neither team had much going for the next few innings, but the game got out of hand for the Knights in the top of the ninth. Second baseman Josh Hodges singled in a run, and then Waugaman brought in another after reaching on an error. The big blow came when designated hitter Reese Swatsworth blasted a three-run homer to give the Wolverines a 9-2 lead.

Cameron Lawson earned the win for Grove City after allowing just two runs in a five-inning start. Freshman Chris Wolfe (Beacon, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-1 after yielding seven runs on 13 hits across 8.1 innings.

Swatsworth knocked in three runs and scored another in a 2-for-5 effort that included his ninth-inning home run. Waugaman also went 2-for-5, scoring three runs and knocking in two more with a homer.

DeAngelis hit a two-run homer in a 1-for-3 effort for the Knights. Fragomeni had another solid game from the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Knights play two more games on Wednesday, March 4, to close out their week in Myrtle Beach. They will take on Johnson & Wales University at 11 a.m., followed by another matchup with Grove City at 3 p.m.
