TOWSON, Md. – Goucher College (5-2) made a big second half push to defeat the Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (2-3), 18-10, Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field.
The Knights had held an early 3-2 lead after sophomore attacker
Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) scored all of the Knights' first three goals. The Gophers then went on a three-goal run to take a 5-3 lead. The Knights tied the game after junior defender
Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) and freshman attacker
Jennifer Bones (Camden, Del.) scored back-to-back goals in the final minute of the half to tie the game at five.
The Gophers ramped up their game after the break, scoring nine of the first 11 goals of the second half to take a 14-7 lead with 11:40 to play. The Knights managed to score three of the next four to get back within five, but Goucher tallied the final three goals of the game to pick up an eight-goal victory.
Jessica Borucki scored four times and assisted four others to lead all scorers with eight points on the afternoon. She also scooped up a game-high five ground balls. Stefi Perry scored a game-high five goals, while Rita Meissner scored three times and assisted another for a four-point game. Jojo Franklin also had four points with two goals and two assists.
Gattoni's three goals push her total to 21 through five games this season. Duffy also tallied a hat trick with three netters of her own. Bones and sophomore midfielder
Kayla Goman (Greenwich, N.Y.) scored twice apiece. Junior midfielder
Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) was everywhere on Saturday, scooping up five ground balls, grabbing a game-high nine draw controls and causing a team-best two turnovers.
Emily Gill made six saves to earn the win for Goucher. Freshman goalkeeper
Emily Carboine (Hauppauge, N.Y.) allowed 13 goals in 46:02 to suffer the loss.
The Gophers held a 32-22 advantage in shots, including a 21-8 edge in the second half. They also scooped up 29 ground balls, while the Knights grabbed just 17.
The Knights will look to bounce back from back-to-back 18-10 losses when they return home to play Hartwick College on Friday, March 20, in the make-up of the game originally scheduled for Feb. 23. The opening draw is slated for 6 p.m.
