Late Rally Falls Short as Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Manhattanville, 11-9

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Three straight Knight goals in the second half tied the game at 8-8, but Manhattanville College (3-2) scored the next three and held strong the rest of the way to defeat Mount Saint Mary College (2-4), 11-9, Tuesday evening at GoValiants.com field.

Junior defender Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals midway through the second half, and sophomore midfielder Kayla Goman (Greenwich, N.Y.) netted the tying goal just 22 seconds later to knot the game up at eight goals apiece. Manhattanville then scored three in a row to take a three-goal lead, and allowed just one more to the Knights in the waning minutes to pick up the two-score win.

The Knights trailed for much of the first half, but an earlier three-goal run tied the game at 5-5 with 9:52 remaining before halftime. The Valiants scored the next pair of goals before the break, then opened up the second frame with another score to take an 8-5 lead before the Knights made their run.

Manhattanville got six points on five goals and an assist from Meghann Haggerty in its win on Tuesday. Jennifer Machin contributed another two goals and a team-high six ground balls. Sarah Dalsey had two points on a goal and a helper, and grabbed a game-best six draw controls.

Duffy scored a season-high four goals and led all players with seven ground balls as the Knights made a comeback push. Goman scored two of her own, while junior midfielder Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) dished out a pair of assists and scored once for a three-point evening. Goman also picked up a team-high four draw controls.

Lauren Cassidy made 15 saves to pick up the win for Manhattanville. Freshman goalkeeper Carly Lennon (Bellmore, N.Y.) suffered the loss after allowing 11 goals, but made 13 saves.

The Valiants had a narrow 34-30 edge in total shots on Tuesday, but both teams were even with 24 shots on net. The Knights scooped up four more ground balls than their hosts with 29, but the Valiants held a 12-10 advantage in draw controls.

The Knights will play their first home game in over two weeks on Saturday, March 28, as they host SUNY College at Old Westbury at Kaplan Field to open Skyline Conference play. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
