Women’s Lacrosse Drops 18-10 Decision to Western Connecticut State

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (2-2) dropped a tough non-conference matchup to Western Connecticut State University (2-1) by a score of 18-10 Wednesday evening at Kaplan Field.

The Colonials led from the get-go, scoring twice in the second minute of the game and never looking back. They went on to take an 11-4 lead into halftime. West Conn scored the first five goals of the second half before the Knights went on a three-goal run to cut the deficit to 16-7. The Knights scored the last three goals of the game after the Colonials scored two more, but discrepancy was too large.

Destinee Carey and Lindsey Eanniello both scored a game-high five goals to lead the Colonials to victory. Eanniello added three assists for an impressive eight-point effort, while Carey helped out one goal to reach six points. Kelsey Heaton turned in five points with three goals and two helpers. Carey and Raquel Heitor matched with five ground balls, while Olivia Kosilla grabbed eight draw controls.

Sophomore attacker Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) kept up her fantastic start to the 2015 season, scoring four more times to improve her season total to 18 goals through four games. She added an assist for five points on the night. Sophomore midfielder Kayla Goman (Greenwich, N.Y.) scored twice for the Knights. Senior defender Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) scooped up a game-high six ground balls and led all players with three caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Knights with five draw controls.

Freshman goalkeeper Carly Lennon (Bellmore, N.Y.) made three saves and allowed 11 goals in the first half to suffer the loss. Nicole Petruzzi grabbed the win for Western Connecticut State, stopping seven shots and allowed 10 goals.

The Colonials held a 26-20 advantage in shots on Wednesday. They narrowly edged out the Knights in ground balls, 24-23, but won the draw-control battle, 19-11.

The Knights will next play on Saturday, March 14, in a road contest against Goucher College. The opening draw is slated for 3 p.m.
