Women’s Basketball Stymied by Mount Saint Vincent in 71-48 Defeat

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – After holding a 31-30 lead at halftime, the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (8-12, 3-5 Skyline) was outscored, 41-17, in the second half to fall, 71-48, to the College of Mount Saint Vincent (17-5, 7-3 Skyline) in Skyline Conference action Wednesday evening at the Peter Jay Sharp Center.
 
The Knights struggled from the field in the second frame, making just 7-of-39 (17.9 perecent) of their shots, including 1-of-15 (6.7 percent) from three-point range. The Dolphins caught fire after halftime, shooting 16-of-29 (55.2 percent).
 
The Knights trailed by just five after a jumper by junior guard Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) with 15:08 left to play, but Mount Saint Vincent then went on a 17-1 run to jump out to an sizeable 59-38 lead. The Dolphin advantage proved to be too much to overcome, as the Knights trailed by 23 as the final buzzer sounded.
 
Mount Saint Mary hung tight with one of the Skyline's top teams in the first half. They never trailed by more than four points, and closed out the half by scoring the final five points to take a one-point lead into the break.
 
Kelly Fraser tallied a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Dolphins on Wednesday. Christina Barone followed with 15 points and a team-high five assists, while Brittany Carroll contributed 11 points and four helpers.
 
Freshman forward Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.), fresh off being named last week's Skyline Women's Basketball Player of the Week, picked up her second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Scicutella came off the bench to lead the Knights with 13 points. In her return from injury, sophomore guard Marisa Delzio (Brewster, N.Y.) dished out a team-high five assists.
 
Despite the scoring discrepancy, the Knights managed to outrebound the Dolphins, 49-45. 30 giveaways cost the Knights, as they led to 21 points for the home team.
 
Now on a three-game drought, the Knights face a tough task in their next contest, as they host The Sage Colleges in the make-up game from Jan. 26. Tip-off from the Kaplan Center is set for 5 p.m.
